To declare a major for the first time fill out the Major Declaration form. Return the completed form (with all required signatures) to the Registrar's Office.
Declaring a Double Major with Single Integrating Project
To declare a double major with a single integrating project (not a complete double major) fill out the Double Major with Single Integrating Project form. Both department chairs must agree to the course/s to be used for the senior project. Return the completed form (with all required signatures) to the Registrar's Office.
Change Major or Adviser
To change a major and/or an adviser after you have already declared your major, fill out the Change of Major/Adviser form. Return the completed form (with all required signatures) to the Registrar's Office.
Special and Combined Major
If you wish to apply for a special or combined major, please discuss requirements and procedures with your Class Dean. Once you are at the point of making application, please follow the instructions on the Special Major form or the Combined Major form, and obtain the necessary signatures, conveying support for your proposed major. These forms should be submitted at the Office of the Dean of Studies.
Petition for Changes to a Combined or Special Major
To request changes to special or combined majors that have already been approved (see above), please fill out the Petition for Changes to a Combined or Special Major form. Return the completed form (with all required signatures) to the Registrar's Office.
A minor is not required. To declare a minor, submit the form available at the Registrar's Office. A student may file the Minor Elective form at any time, but the minor will not be recorded until the student has completed all required courses with grades of C- or higher.
A student may elect a minor in a department only if the Catalogue lists a minor for that department. A minor requires at least five courses (three of which must be qualifying Barnard or Columbia courses) that total a minimum of 15 points. Requirements depend on the minor chosen (see individual department curriculum statements); courses are selected in consultation with the department chair. Courses for the major and minor may not overlap (except by petition from the minor department's chair, in cases where the minor requires more than 18 points, the major requires more than 40 points, the overlapping courses are required for both major and minor, and the request is for no more than two overlapping courses). To qualify for the minor, a course must be letter-graded A+ to C-. Any previous P's in courses required the minor will be converted when the minor is put on the transcript. Courses for the minor may also be used for general education requirements.
