Curricula & Research

Barnard offers a variety of courses in sustainable sciences and theory, and works closely with the Earth Institute at Columbia University. Expand your career path, and get connected with a network of internships and courses that will help you gain experience in environmental awareness.

Students interested in sustainability have the opportunity to incorporate Barnard's green efforts into their education. The Department of Environmental Science, among many others, offers courses that examine the science and policy behind sustainable development.

Environment & Sustainability Major

In the Fall of 2017, the Environment and Sustainability major was approved by the Barnard College faculty (previously it was the College maintained an Environmental Policy major). The major teaches students to develop an understanding of the processes and stresses of earth’s systems, handle environmental data and make reasoned assessments, and engage in collaborative and interdisciplinary work required for developing approaches to maintain a sustainable environment.

Required Courses

Take a look at the required list of courses for the major (semester availability will vary).
Please also see this list for additional courses related to sustainability and environmental awareness.

New York City is home to hundreds of sustainable development organizations, and by interning at these organizations, students are exposed to cutting-edge work happening outside of the classroom. To learn more about internship and job opportunities, visit the Career Development website and consult Barnard Career Library to find more resources about green jobs.

The Earth Institute

The Earth Institute at Columbia University is also an excellent resource for students and alumnae interested in green careers and internships. The Earth Institute distributes a mailing list about green jobs and internships and organizes an annual All Ivy Environmental and Sustainable Development Career Fair to provide representatives from public agencies, consulting firms, nonprofit organizations and business and industry an opportunity to connect with top undergraduate and graduate students.
