As a leading New York academic institution, Barnard has participated in Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg's PlaNYC2030, a commitment to enhance the urban environment of all five New York City boroughs. Barnard completed the first stage of the challenge early, achieving a 30% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in just six years and signed on for the second phase, a 50% reduction by the year 2025.

Maintenance

In order to maintain sustainable initiatives on campus, the institution preforms regular maintence on the buildings. This includes reducing building operating temperatures during the summer and increasing temperatures in the winter. Barnard maintains ongoing retro-commissioning to repair roofs, windows, stream traps, and pipe insulation. Additionally, Barnard is in the process of switching the primary mode of lighting to LED bulbs across campus.

Buildings

Currently 50% of Barnard's electricity use comes from American wind energy. In addition, The Milstein Center is currently being built to meet LEED Silver standards and The Diana Center maintains its LEED Gold certification. 

Our Carbon Footprint

In 2015, Barnard partnered with Gotham 360 to generate a comprehensive carbon footprint of our collective campus emissions. While many carbon inventories focus largely on Scopes 1 and 2 (electricity, energy, etc.), Barnard made an unusually detailed assessment of our Scope 3 emissions, which include factors like travel, food, purchases, and waste.
