The 2025-26 Wellness Spot Peer Educators

Rachel Binderman '26 (They/She)

I am Rachel Binderman, a Senior studying Human Rights and WGSS here at Barnard, and Jewish Gender and Women Studies over at the Jewish Theological Seminary. I currently and teaching art at Harlem Grown, focusing on my interest in the intersections of art education and children's advocacy. I grew up in Atlanta, GA where I received very little sex education focused on abstinence. At the Wellness Spot, I am able to bring my passion for comprehensive, pleasure centered sex education to the Barnard community. This year at the WS, I also hope to explore having more conversations and events geared towards navigating a broken healthcare system.

This desire to “do good” aligns with my motivations to become a peer educator. As a peer educator, I'm committed to helping my peers integrate into a community while embracing wellness and being proactive towards becoming their healthiest selves. In my free time, I love trying new recipes, reading, watching movies, and doing arts and crafts. I’m also currently learning to roller skate and picking up sewing. I am always free to talk and lend a listening ear if needed!

Jezlyn Montas '26 (She/Her)

Jezlyn Montas is currently a senior at Barnard College studying Psychology with a minor in Women Studies and Education. As an aspiring clinical psychologist, Jezlyn seeks opportunities to support marginalized and vulnerable communities. Her identity as a feminist and poet shapes her belief in the power of creative expression and collective care as tools of liberation. As a peer educator, Jezlyn happily helps students navigate college through workshops that support their physical, mental, sexual, and emotional health. Working with Barnard’s other peer educators, Jezlyn co-creates and leads projects that focus on topics that society has historically overlooked, such as women and gender minorities' health and well-being.

A 40-Year History of Peer-Led Education

Peer educators are specially trained Barnard students who volunteer to provide information, conduct outreach, engage in advocacy, and develop creative and effective strategies to promote and support health and wellness. The peer education program began at Barnard in 1986. Well-Woman was established in 1993 to bring together per-existing small, topical peer educator groups to form one comprehensive group. In May of 2022, Well-Woman changed its name to The Wellness Spot.

The Wellness Spot Peer Educators are part of the Health Promotion Program at Barnard, and are advised by professional staff. New and returning peer educators receive a week of training before the fall semester begins, and meet weekly for additional training, group work, and planning during the academic year.

What Do Peer Educators Do?

They staff evening office hours in our center (times when students can drop-in to ask questions, check out the office, watch movies, and just relax in our comfy space) liaise with RAs and student groups, develop events, facilitate workshops, attend weekly meetings with Wellness Spot staff, help with events like our annual cupcake decorating and milk tasting (yes, milk tasting!), host our weekly craft club, table around campus, serve as wellness resources for the student body, and much more!

What Do Peer Educators Talk About?

The peer educators talk about any and all health and wellness issues that impact our community, including self-care, body image, nutrition, sexual health, stress management, sleep, sexuality, identity, community, mindfulness, relationships, and more.
