Computer Science

students poster session

Barnard's computer science community is growing. Barnard’s Computer Science department offers meaningful computing education and experiences to all Barnard students and partners with Columbia's Computer Science department to offer a major in Computer Science. The department aims to expand students' use and understanding of computation and data analysis across disciplines; offer students opportunities to think critically about the social implications of technology, including how to harness it for social good; promote curricular and pedagogical advances in computer science and its multidisciplinary applications; and provide new models for engaging students and enhancing diversity in computing.

Our Department

Computer Science is the study of the foundations and applications of computing, algorithms, and their capabilities. Computer Science majors at Barnard study the foundations and applications of computing, as well as addressing the societal implications of computing technology. Through upper-level courses at Barnard and Columbia, students acquire the flexibility needed in a rapidly changing field. Students are prepared to engage in both applied and theoretical developments in computer science, to think critically both using computing and about computing, and to harness computing for social good, for scientific research, for the creative arts, and more.
Major
Computer Science 4+1 BA/MS Pathway
Thinking Technologically and Digitally

Most graduates of the Computer Science Program at Barnard step directly into career positions in computer science with industry or government, or continue their education in graduate degree programs. Many choose to combine computer science with a second career interest by pursuing additional programs in business administration, medicine, or other professional studies.

If you are considering the Computer Science major, we encourage you to come to our departmental open house / program planning meeting before registration begins for the following semester and/or our departmental welcome events near the start of each semester.
