Fall 2019 Deferred Exams
Fall 2019 Deferred Exam Procedures
To accommodate the large number of students who deferred fall 2019 exams, the College will offer a self-scheduled exam process for the majority of deferred exams. A self-scheduled exam model allows students to select when to take their exams from among a number of blocked exam time periods.
To take a self-scheduled deferred exam:
-
Come to the exam center (James Room, 4th floor Barnard Hall) 30 minutes before the start of an official exam period. (Students who arrive late may not be allowed to sit for the exam.)
-
Bring your Barnard ID card, as it will be needed to pick up your exam.
-
Other than your ID card, bring as little as possible with you to the exam. You will not have access to your personal belongings, with the exception of specific aids your instructor has approved for use during the exam. Cell phones and other devices must be turned off and stowed (completely enclosed in a backpack, tote bag or purse) before entering the exam room. Electronic devices cannot be referred to for any reason (including monitoring the time) until you have returned your completed exam to the proctor.
-
Identify yourself and the exam you wish to take during that exam period. You may take any of your deferred exams during any of the exam periods listed below. You can only take one exam during each exam period. If you are required to take a specific exam at a specific day/time, you will receive an email with those instructions prior to the first day of deferred exams.
-
Exam center staff will provide you with the sealed exam envelope, including a cover sheet with specific instructions for taking the exam. These include:
-
Whether the exam must be taken in a closed-book room or open-book room
-
Whether you may use a non-programmable calculator (this is the one aid that may be elected by the instructor even in a closed-book room)
-
Whether you should provide answers in a blue book or directly on the exam
-
Additional instructions/aids, if any, for exams to be taken in an open-book room
-
-
If the instructions say that you will need blue books, pick those up before leaving the exam center. (There will also be additional blue books in each exam room.)
-
Do not open the exam envelope until you have reached your exam room.
-
Go to one of the available exam rooms (see list below), check in with the proctor, take a seat and wait for the proctor’s instruction to open the exam envelope. If your exam is an open-book exam, you will need to select one of the designated open-book rooms. Exams may only be taken in one of the designated exam rooms.
-
Students are allowed 3 hours for each exam.
-
If you have any questions during the exam, the proctor(s) in each exam room will be available to assist.
-
If you become sick during an exam or believe the exam is defective in some way, inform the proctor and turn over all exam materials to the proctor before leaving the room. Then return to the exam center and ask for further directions from the supervisor.
If you have questions or concerns about how self-scheduled exams work, please reach out to your Class Dean for assistance.
*Students with testing accommodations who usually take their exams with the Center for Accessibility Resources and Disability Services (CARDS) should be in touch with that office to schedule their deferred final exams. The available times offered by CARDS may differ from the above schedule. Please email cards@barnard.edu with any questions.
**Exams requiring audio, oral or visual components -- or other special testing conditions -- will be arranged by the individual faculty member. If you need to take one of these types of exams, the faculty member will reach out to you directly.**

Honor Code
Self-scheduled exams are a privilege made possible by Barnard College's Honor Code, requiring the cooperation of each individual member of the community. Every student is expected to uphold and adhere to the Honor Code. Each student must read and observe all procedures on the exam envelope and sign the additional enclosed honor statements (listed below). The Honor Code precludes each student from speaking about an exam (e.g. its content, format, etc.) with any other student. If asked about an exam by another student, an appropriate response would be, “I finished it.”
"We, the students of Barnard College, resolve to uphold the honor of the College by engaging with integrity in all of our academic pursuits. We affirm that academic integrity is the honorable creation and presentation of our own work. We acknowledge that it is our responsibility to seek clarification of proper forms of collaboration and use of academic resources in all assignments or exams. We consider academic integrity to include the proper use and care for all print, electronic, or other academic resources. We will respect the rights of others to engage in pursuit of learning in order to uphold our commitment to honor. We pledge to do all that is in our power to create a spirit of honesty and honor for its own sake."
Honor Code Acknowledgement for Self-Scheduled Deferred Exams
Students taking a self-scheduled deferred exam will need to sign the following statement:
In the spirit of the Barnard Honor Code, I hereby pledge the following:
-
I have followed the instructions provided by the instructor. I took the exam in an appropriate official exam room and used no devices or aids not specifically authorized by the instructor.
-
I have enclosed all blue books used and all pages of the exam in this envelope.
-
I pledge not to share in any way the content, difficulty level or any other aspect of this exam until after the end of the last deferred exam session of the semester. This applies everywhere and with everyone (other than the course instructor), whether or not they are fellow students in the particular course.
-
My signature below confirms that I have read, understood, and followed all instructions on this envelope.
