Knowledge & Action

Encouraging Sustainable Food Practices

One of Barnard’s goals is to build a more sustainable campus by reducing waste, emissions, and costs; transforming consumption patterns on campus; and increasing access affordability for our students — an effort threaded throughout the curriculum. Barnard students are living out this mission by taking action on campus and in their communities to reduce food waste.

Barnard breaks the boundaries between the classroom and the outside world. As a student, you’ll translate knowledge into action by engaging in real life experiences that will illuminate and inform your studies.

Research

A Living History

At Barnard, you’ll learn how to tell stories in new ways that inform and enlighten. As a student-researcher with the Barnard Center for Research on Women (BCRW), Asha Futterman ‘21 collaborated with activist and BCRW Researcher-in-Residence Mariame Kaba to host the Radical Black Women of Harlem: A Walking Tour, which highlights historic Black women who helped to radically change Harlem.

Connecting with the Community

At Barnard, your coursework connects you to the community in real and meaningful ways. For their Athena Senior Seminar, three members of the Class of 2021 produced The Harmony Series, a virtual concert to help uplift some of the most at risk for COVID-19.

I wanted my Athena Senior Action Project to be meaningful and something I am passionate about. I love[d] working on it because it fe[lt] like a thoughtful and valuable contribution to our community and beyond; the intergenerational aspect of the project [was] definitely powerful.

Recycling Clothes for Climate Action

Apparel represents a $2 trillion industry, accounting for 2.1 billion metric tons of greenhouse-gas emissions. Barnard’s “Women, Clothing, and Climate” event brought scholars and activists together with students for discussions, mending workshops, and a used-clothing swap shop.

Research

Research drives new products, policies, and processes that solve problems. At Barnard, you’ll have opportunities to collaborate with professors on scholarly and scientific research, whatever your major.
