Eduardo Moncada, assistant professor of political science, released his book Resisting Extortion in January 2022, and over the last year, it has been recognized for its significant contributions to the scientific literature on Latin American government, politics, and policy. Moncada’s work explores criminal extortion in Colombia, El Salvador, and Mexico – a widespread and severe problem that had previously received little research attention. His book has garnered several positive reviews and awards, including the award for Best Publication of 2022 from the Defense, Public Security, and Democracy Section of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA) and an Honorable Mention for the 2022 Bryce Wood Book Award from LASA. Both prizes honor outstanding publications focused on Latin America in the social sciences and humanities fields. Resisting Extortion also received the 2022 Outstanding Book Award from the Division of International Criminology of the American Society of Criminology. Additionally, it earned an Honorable Mention for the 2022 Giovanni Sartori Book Award from the Qualitative and Multi-Method Research Section of the American Political Science Association. This award recognizes outstanding new research within the qualitative tradition. Finally, Moncada’s book was selected as the Co-Winner of the 2022 Best Book Award by the International Association of the Study of Organized Crime. One of four prizes awarded by the organization each year, this award recognizes the best book or monograph written on the subject of organized crime.
