NextGen Leadership Institute

Explore Your Interests and Prepare for College

The NextGen Leadership Institute

Explore a subject that interests you on Barnard’s New York City campus through the NextGen Leadership Institute, a noncredit-bearing program for high school students. Choose a course in Scientific Exploration, Literature & Performing Arts, or Global Humanities, and develop your ideas through focused coursework and conversations with classmates.

All students also participate in Leadership in Action, exploring ways to contribute to their communities, and Foundations for Well-Being, focused on college preparation and personal well-being.

Apply to One or Both Sessions:

Session I: June 28 – July 16, 2027

Session II: July 19 – August 6, 2027

Each session is a separate three-week experience, with residential and commuter options available.

Summer 2027 applications open December 1, 2026.

Scientific Exploration

Investigate questions about the natural world and human behavior, and examine how scientists use evidence to understand them. Through activities shaped by your course, you’ll practice analyzing information, testing ideas, and explaining your findings.

Literature & Performing Arts

Explore how stories and ideas take shape through literature, writing, and performance. Depending on your course, you’ll interpret creative works or develop your own, using discussion and feedback to refine your perspective and strengthen your expression.

Global Humanities

Examine how people, ideas, and institutions shape societies. Through close reading and discussion, you’ll explore questions about culture, identity, and power while learning to support your arguments and engage thoughtfully with different perspectives.

Leadership and Well-Being

Alongside your coursework, all NextGen students participate in two required programs that support leadership development and preparation for college.

Leadership in Action

Explore how you can contribute to a group and make an impact in your community. Through workshops and discussion, you’ll examine different approaches to leadership and consider how to apply them in your school and everyday life.

Foundations for Well-Being

Preparing for college includes understanding how you learn and what helps you feel supported. These sessions offer opportunities to reflect on new responsibilities and consider routines that support your learning and well-being as you become more independent.
