Lisa Northrop, Senior Associate in Physical Education, joined the Barnard faculty in 2004. Her areas of expertise include mind/body health and yoga with an emphasis on wellness as a process of achieving a balanced inner state of health so as to function more efficiently and creatively in the external world. This is an individual formula of learning and implementing a range of health practices that can service the specific needs of each person through different stages of life. Her philosophy draws from the Wellness Wheel method of encompassing various aspects of health including: Physical, Occupational, Social, Intellectual, Environmental, Emotional, and Spiritual health. She is a Certified Health Education Specialist with the National Center for Health Education Credentialing.
Her initial yoga training was in the Iyengar tradition with subsequent teacher training certifications from Integral Yoga Institute in New York City, YogaFit, and Erich Schiffmann's Teacher Training Program in Santa Monica, CA. Her recent studies have been in the Shadow Yoga method. She is a Registered Yoga Teacher with the Yoga Alliance (E-RYT-200 and RYT-500). She is certified by the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health as an Ayurvedic yoga teacher. Her Pilates training certifications are from Pilates Institute of America and the Pilates Academy International/Pilates on Fifth. She holds certifications as a Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor with the American Council on Exercise, and is CPR/AED and Standard First Aid certified with the American Red Cross.
