Using Our Space
Booking and Using Our Space
The Movement Lab provides space to artists involved in dance, performance, movement-related processes, technology, and their intersections.
I. Lab Hours
The Movement Lab at The Milstein Center LL020 is available from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM, Monday through Saturday to support space bookings that engage with our mission of centering artistic practices and creative research.
Exceptions can be made for lab users who wish to book during nonstandard hours, provided they have completed space training and are self-sufficient during their bookings, as no staff support will be available during off hours.
Note that the Lab observes the Barnard Academic Calendar and will be closed when classes are not in session, unless otherwise posted.
II. Requesting Lab Space
For first-time lab users: Fill out the Movement Lab Booking Request Form and share the requested information about your background, projected booking dates, and the nature of the project you wish to develop at the lab.
All first-time lab users must complete a space training session with an ML team member before being authorized to make space bookings and work in the lab independently. Space training sessions happen in person at the lab and can last 1-2 hours depending on individual training needs. All space training sessions will be coordinated and scheduled with the lab team over email.
Once space training has been completed, all lab users must download, sign, and return the ML Usage Agreement (to be requested from ML team) or the contract specific to their engagement with the lab. Lab users cannot book space without returning their signed contracts or agreements.
For trained lab users: Send booking requests to movement@barnard.edu, with the subject line "Booking Request/Full Name." Wait 1-3 business days for a confirmation email from the lab team.
We require 7 days' notice for space booking requests. We are currently taking booking requests through October 31, 2024.
Before requesting to book specific dates and times, please consult the lab calendar for an idea of when the space is available.
Lab users can book up to 6 hours per day to ensure that multiple artists can use the lab. The lab team's suggested limit is 3 hours per day.
III. Space Booking Policies & Terms of Use
We understand that plans can change unexpectedly. To accommodate such situations, we have instituted a cancellation policy as follows: cancellations can only be made up to 24 hours before the scheduled booking by emailing movement@barnard.edu. Failure to follow the lab’s cancellation policy twice will result in suspension from booking the lab for the remainder of the semester. Anyone found to be in the lab without scheduling time beforehand is in violation of lab policies and therefore subject to loss of space booking privileges.
Please note that not all booking requests are guaranteed to be confirmed by the ML. The ML reserves the right to deny any requests they may deem as misaligned with the lab’s mission and proper use. If for programming purposes or urgent reasons, the ML team needs to cancel or reschedule your space booking, we hold the right to do so.
All urgent concerns must be sent to movement@barnard.edu, as this email reaches all team members.
Open Lab
Please check the calendar below for our periodic Open Lab times. Open Lab is shared drop-in hours where everyone is welcome into the lab for experimentation and exploration.
