STEAM in the City is a grant-funded program hosted by the Community Engagement and Inclusion office that is designed to support local K–12 public school teachers in developing experiential learning opportunities for their students in STEAM fields (science, technology, engineering, arts/architecture/agriculture, and mathematics). These learning opportunities are geared towards getting students out to explore their neighborhood– identifying tree types in Morningside Park, meeting baby bees in Harlem rooftop apiaries, and a wide range of other experiences that will change how students understand and interact with their local ecosystem. Participating Teacher Fellows receive STEAM education professional development workshops with Barnard faculty and staff, a supply budget for STEAM related project and classroom materials, and staffing support for STEAM projects from Student Educational Experience Designers (SEEDs).
STEAM SEEDs
Applications to be a STEAM SEED are officially open!
We will be accepting applications for our summer openings until April 15 and for our fall openings until April 12. Search for STEAM SEED on Workday to find both positions, or email steam@barnard.edu for help locating the listing.
Becoming a SEED was the best move I made in my Barnard career. I’ve been able to explore and deepen my passion for STEAM education, tap into a variety of creative mediums, work with fantastic teachers and kids, and make amazing new friends. I’m so grateful to be a SEED!
What is a SEED?
The STEAM Student Educational Experience Designers (SEEDs) help enact these learning experiences. In a week on the job, a SEED may co-facilitate a solar powered car building workshop at the Boys and Girls Club, edit a video demonstrating how to assemble a working wooden crane, lead a class brainstorm in the Barnard Greenhouse, make a music speaker out of magnets and recycled materials at a Teacher Fellow professional development session in the Design Center, or write a curriculum outline for a tree mapping activity in Morningside Park.
From supporting Teacher Fellows in planning age-appropriate project curriculum to co-facilitating workshops in the parks with them and creating engaging STEAM activity kits, the SEED role is a dynamic opportunity to work closely across all stages of a local environment informed experiential learning process, and join a community of passionate student educators.
SEEDs are paid $18.50 / hour.

A STEAM SEED is a creative thinker who cares deeply about public education and engaging actively with the Harlem community, has intersectional interest and expertise in STEAM fields, and is curious about honing their skills as an educator. We are looking for Student Educational Experience Designers with a range of different backgrounds and expertises– if you help your younger siblings with their math homework, make a lot of crafts, work in an astrophysics lab, play around with ingredient proportions in family recipes, garden in your spare time, enjoy coding, love exploring local parks, or otherwise connect to the world of STEAM, we want to hear from you!
