Mobile Safety Escorts
The CARES Department provides a mobile escort service available to the entire college community. This phone service is available anytime you are uncomfortable walking from one point to another.
You can call 212-854-3362 from your cell phone and a CARES staff member will stay on the line with you while you walk to your destination.
If a crime does occur on-campus, call Community Safety immediately at 212-854-6666.
For off-campus students, call 911 immediately. The CARES Department seeks to support victims of crime or other adverse experiences and provides appropriate referrals to on-campus and local community resources.
Evening Ride Share On Demand
Barnard has joined Columbia University in offering the Via ride share service using an on-demand app-based system. Please click here to see the most updated availability of Via. This point-to-point service is a limited shared ride within a geo-fenced area of the Morningside and Manhattanville area and may be especially helpful for students living on or close to campus. All riders and drivers must continue to wear face coverings when in the vehicle, regardless of where you are seated.
Via drivers have the right to refuse service to a rider who is not wearing a face covering.
Using the Via app is the easiest and most effective way to coordinate a ride, but if you cannot use the Via app, you can also call for a ride. Whether you use the Via app or call, you will need to first get a promo code before you request your first ride. Service operates free of charge to students during the evening shuttle hours, currently from 4:00 PM-3:00 AM.
Community Safety Transportation Assistance: Barnard Community Safety operates a vehicle between Barnard buildings for business purposes and for scheduled needs between Barnard buildings. Students who are on Barnard's campus and ready to return to a Barnard Residence Hall after dark and receiving long wait times with Via can check with Community Safety - either at the main gate, in Barnard Hall at the window inside the lobby, or by calling CARES Response at 212-854-3362. Note that this service may have a 20-30 minute wait, depending upon staff and vehicle availability, but Community Safety will provide transportation between main campus and the outer Barnard residence halls after dark until sunrise. Students are asked to complete a brief check in form upon entering the College vehicle for this transportation assistance.
Columbia University Intercampus Shuttle Service
Barnard students, faculty, and staff (current ID Holders) can use the Columbia Intercampus Shuttle Service that connects Columbia's Morningside, Manhattanville, and Medical Center campuses. More information about the Columbia Intercampus Shuttle can be found on their website.
