Dear Barnard Family,
I’ve had the pleasure of meeting so many bold, beautiful Barnard alumnae during my time as president of the Alumnae Association. And it would take a memoir to describe each one. In celebration of my 35th Barnard Reunion, I would like to share a few of my new friendships and encourage you all to engage or reconnect with your Barnard family at a milestone Reunion, at a regional event, or online.
During Leadership Assembly 2024, there was a group of women that exuded fun, enthusiasm, and camaraderie at every session they participated in. I had to find out who they were and what class they were from. They welcomed me in that day, and now there is no looking back — they were from the Class of 1978! Their monthly Zoom calls, in-person outings, and a special meetup at the Athena Film Festival have been wonderful highlights of this year for me.
I had the privilege of meeting some very bold, talented Barnard young alumnae in D.C. earlier this year. They are lobbyists, economists, administrators, and more. It confirmed for me the vast opportunities that open up because of a Barnard education and how it equips us as alumnae. We are not necessarily defined by our majors. Our incredible liberal arts education gives us the ability to work and serve in multifaceted roles for a lifetime.
And lastly, I’ve met some rock-star Barnard women whom I’ve discovered in my professional network. These ladies are changemakers, role models, and leaders in their industry and elevate the dental profession through their character, determination, and ingenuity.
In my last letter, I referenced our connection to Barnard as a lifelong journey. Whether you are a new grad, single or married, raising kids or an empty nester, CEO, entrepreneur, or retired — this magnificent community is here for you.
Here’s one example of lifelong learning through community engagement: Barnard recently co-hosted the Zora Neale Hurston Summit, which celebrated the life and work of this iconic, pioneering Barnard woman. If you missed it, don’t worry. We’ll be honoring this Class of 1928 grad through her centennial year of 2028, so be on the lookout for more events to come, where you can bring a friend and make some new ones, too!
And remember: When one of Zora’s characters experiences love in the great novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, Zora writes, “her soul crawled out from its hiding place.” My wish for all of us is to let our love for our Barnard family bring our souls out!
I’m always a resource and friend.
With gratitude and respect,
