Barnard College President Laura Ann Rosenbury announced that 14 faculty members have been named to chairs and professorships at the College.
These appointments become effective July 1. Named chairs and professorships are the highest honor bestowed upon faculty members by a college or university.
“This honor recognizes above all significant accomplishment in scholarship or creative practice, as well as excellence in teaching and service,” Rosenbury said. “With these new appointments, there are now about 54 faculty members holding named chairs or professorships at Barnard.”
The College received more than 40 nomination letters from colleagues across the college, something Rosenbury said speaks to both “the many accomplishments of our faculty members and to the generosity of colleagues who took the time to describe and advocate for their peers.”
“We read the letters with great interest and admiration,” said Rebecca L. Walkowitz, Provost and Dean of the Faculty. “While we were able to appoint only 14 faculty members into vacant or soon-to-be vacant chairs and professorships, there were many excellent candidates, and we look forward to honoring additional faculty when new positions become available.”
