At their first game of the season, Columbia women’s soccer took the field with a new team – which includes six new Barnard College first-year players, as well as two returning Barnard students.
In Columbia Lions women's soccer Coach Tracey Bartholomew’s 12th year at the helm, the team not only improved upon its wins for the third consecutive season, but also earned the second seed in the Ivy League Tournament – the team’s highest finish in the regular season since 2017. Columbia women’s soccer was picked to finish fourth in the 2025 Ivy League Preseason Poll, and Bartholomew predicts a successful season, in part, because of the strong team.
“This year, we have nearly three times as many new recruits from Barnard as in years past and we couldn’t be prouder to have these incredibly talented and hard-working women become Lions,” said Bartholomew. “This is a reflection of hard work both on and off the field. While our teams for the past several seasons have focused on training hard and winning, our athletics team has worked to grow the number of women’s soccer recruits from Barnard and to ensure more women have access to competitive sports and higher education.”
Women’s soccer games are scheduled to continue through November, with games showing on ESPN+.
Barnard continues to be the only women's college where students are able to compete in NCAA Division I sports through the unique Barnard-Columbia athletic consortium as supported and walk-on athletes.
Barnard President Laura Ann Rosenbury praised the 45 Barnard students — both incoming and returning athletes — for their hard work as college athletes.
“More and more athletes are choosing to play sports and attend Barnard College — a testament to our talented, driven and well-rounded community of women,” Rosenbury said. “These young women work hard as students and balance their schoolwork with rigorous practice, training and competition schedules. They represent the very best of what Barnard has to offer and we wish them luck this upcoming year both on and off the field.”
Barnard athletes also continue to represent the school in basketball, with two new recruits joining Lions women’s basketball, the three-time reigning Ivy League champions, and last season’s outright champions. Hilke Feldrappe '27 joins the team as a transfer from Mizzou, as well as Alicia Mitchell '29. Their season begins on the road at Butler on Friday, November 7 with a home opener on November 15.
