There’s no getting around the fact that the basketball team gets the “Lions’ share” of attention when it comes to women’s sports. But with head coach Megan Griffith continually bringing the team to March Madness, a heretofore unheard-of accomplishment, the attention is more than deserved. In addition, it’s been a stellar year for other Lions teams, and Barnard athletes have garnered attention on other courts, fields, and pistes.
On the pistes, the fencing team earned 12 bids to the NCAA Championship. Two Barnard students are on the championship roster for women’s sabre: Chloe Gouhin ’25 and Tamar Gordon ’26 (below). “I may not be able to fence my best for myself, but fighting for my teammates comes naturally,” says Gouhin.
On the courts, the women’s squash team earned wins at the National Team Championships with two of Barnard’s own: Nourin Khalifa ’26 and Andreea Ghiorghisor ’28, who defeated Drexel University’s Lijana Sultana. “My excitement to train with the team is balanced with a love for reading romance books, watching television series, going out [with friends], and drinking iced coffee,” says Ghiorghisor.
On the archery field, at the Collegiate Recurve Female Division of the 2025 Vegas Shoot, archer Judith Gottlieb ’25 earned bronze with a score of 572. Briana Moore ’28 (top photo), who finished 23rd in the compound division, shares that “the opportunity to [shoot archery] through the Columbia-Barnard Athletic Consortium is one for which I am most grateful.”
And last, but most certainly not least, women’s basketball head coach Megan Griffith ’07CC — who has coached many Barnard players, including Emily Montes ’27 and Blau Tor ’27 — was named a finalist for the 2025 Kathy Delaney-Smith Mid-Major Coach of the Year Award, presented by Her Hoop Stats. “The women’s basketball team truly has created a second family for me,” says Montes.
