Jonathan Snow, a Barnard Assistant Professor of Biology, published an article this January detailing his research testing a smartphone-based program designed to detect chitin-positive Nosema spores in honey bees. Nosema ceranae and Nosema apis are parasites believed to be a factor in the decline of honey bee populations. Collaborating with Aydogan Ozcan, UCLA Chancellor’s Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the associate director of the California NanoSystems Institute at UCLA and Hatice Ceylan Koydemir, a senior research associate at UCLA, Snow tested the performance of the mobile platform and demonstrated its use in comparison with other methods.
