Appointment Types
Our care encompasses a wide range of general services, with a particular emphasis on the developmental needs of college-aged women.
You may be seen at the Primary Care Health Service by appointment or as a "walk-in." Our walk-in system is for urgent care needs only.
There is a $25 no show fee for all missed appointments that are not canceled ahead of time.

Appointment Types
Walk-In/Urgent Care visits are for urgent medical and GYN issues that cannot wait until a scheduled appointment is available.
Some examples of common urgent care issues are: sore throat, sinus infection, allergy symptoms, urgent sexually transmitted infection concerns, urinary tract infection, yeast infection, sprained ankle, back pain, cold/virus symptoms, and cough.
- Length: Approximately 20 - 30 minutes
- Availability: Monday – Wednesday 9:00 AM – 11:30 AM, Thursday 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM, Friday 9:00 AM - 11:30 AM
- Scheduling: Cannot be made in advance. Patients are seen in order of urgency and then time of arrival. The earlier you arrive the more likely it is you will be seen.
Same Day Appointments are for urgent medical and gynecological (GYN) issues.
- Length: 30 minutes
- Availability: Monday – Friday afternoons.
- Scheduling: Can only be made via phone or in person and must be scheduled the same day.
Contraceptive management appointments are for new, current or restarted contraceptive prescriptions or for pre-IUD/Nexplanon medical clearance.
- Length: 20 minutes
- Availability: Select weekday mornings.
- Scheduling: Can schedule on the Open Communicator website, via phone or in person.
GYN visits are for routine annual exams, routine STI screening, or on-going menstrual, vaginal or urinary problems.
If you have an urgent GYN issue, please come in during our Walk-In/Urgent Care Hours or call the PCHS at 1-212-854-2091 for our Same Day Appointment availability.
- Length: 40 minutes
- Availability: Monday – Friday afternoons.

Medical visits are for on-going/chronic medical issues, referral requests, and follow ups.
If you have an urgent medical issue, please come in during our Walk-In/Urgent Care Hours or call the PCHS at 1-212-854-2091 for our Same Day Appointment availability.
- Length: 30 minutes
- Availability: Monday – Thursday afternoons.
- Scheduling: Can schedule on the Open Communicator website, via phone or in person.
Physical Exam and/or Form Completion visits are for annual physical exams, forms for study abroad, internships, or medical clearances.
This is NOT a Travel/Immunization appointment.
If you need any immunizations or Travel consults please call 1-212-854-2091 to schedule a Travel and/or Immunization appointment. We recommend that you schedule your Physical Exam/Form Completion appointment for after your Travel/Immunization appointment.
- Length: 60 minutes
- Availability: Monday – Friday afternoons.
- Scheduling: Can schedule on the Open Communicator website, via phone or in person.
- We suggest that you bring a copy of your most recent vaccination record with you to your Physical Exam and/or Form Completion appointment.
- Please note that this type of appointment is necessary for any form completion regardless of length of form
The PCHS offers a number of vaccines to Barnard students, available by appointment only.

- Length: 10 - 40 minutes depending on how many immunizations are given
- Availability: Monday – Friday mornings and afternoons.
- Scheduling: Can schedule via phone or in person.
PPD Placement or Reading appointments are for tuberculosis screening.
- Length: 10 minutes
- Availability: Monday – Friday mornings and afternoons. PPD placements are not performed on Thursdays.
- Scheduling: Can schedule via phone or in person.
Nursing appointments are for nursing follow ups, EKGs, wound check follow ups, and for nursing procedures such as ear irrigation and medication administration.
- Length: 20 minutes
- Availability: Monday – Friday mornings and afternoons.
- Scheduling: Can schedule via phone or in person.
All allergy appointments are made once all paperwork and protocols have been reviewed and approved by the PCHS staff.
- Length: 20 - 40 minutes depending on your immunotherapy protocol
- Availability: Monday – Friday mornings.
- Scheduling: Can schedule via phone or in person.
Nutrition appointments offer opportunity to learn more about healthy eating, to discuss food allergies and sensitivities, to create plans for navigating the cafeteria or your own kitchen, and to address any eating concerns.

There is a strict 24 hour cancellation policy for all nutritionist appointments.
- There is a $25 late cancellation fee for all nutritionist appointments that are not cancelled at least 24 hours before your scheduled appointment.

Health education appointments offer the opportunity to lean more about contraceptive options: whether you're exploring options and want a general overview or have a specific method you'd like to learn more about. They can also be a great opportunity to learn more about sexually transmitted infections and testing and talking to partners.

- Availability: Monday, Tuesday & Thursday mornings
- Scheduling: Can schedule via phone or in person.
Unable to make the Primary Care health education appointment times? Our health educator also has open drop-in hours in Well-Woman in the afternoons when you're welcome to stop by and chat about sexual health or about any issue related to wellness, or you can visit Well-Woman's evening peer educator office hours to chat with a trained student volunteer.

The flu shot is free for students with Aetna Student Health and $20 for students who do not have the student insurance. Reimbursement may be available depending on your outside insurance. Please call Primary Care and ask to speak to our Director of Operations, Elliot Wasserman, with any questions.

The PCHS can only send and order labs for PCHS or Furman Counseling providers.
We cannot process any lab requests for outside providers.
If you have a lab order request from an outside provider, please check with your insurance to find your preferred lab.
The two major labs are Quest Diagnostics and LabCorp. Both labs have several locations throughout NYC and most offer walk-in and scheduled appointments. The lab will then send the results directly to your outside provider. Please see their websites for more information.

You can cancel most scheduled PCHS appointment via the Open Communicator website in the Appointments Section, regardless of whether you made it online, over the phone or in person!
Appointments cannot be canceled via:
- Voice mail
- gBear/personal email
- Open Communicator Secure Messaging
Special Info for Nutrition Appointments:
There is a strict 24 hour cancellation policy for all nutritionist appointments.
- There is a $25 late cancellation fee for all nutritionist appointments that are not cancelled at least 24 hours before your scheduled appointment.
- To cancel an appointment, please call Primary Care at 1-212-854-2091 at least 24 hours before your scheduled appointment. You cannot cancel nutritionist appointments online.
Yes! The PCHS charges a $25 no show appointment fee for all appointments which have not been canceled before the start of your appointment.

All students must bring their insurance card (either the physical card or a print out of the front and back of the card) every time they visit the PCHS.
There is no co-pay or visit fee at the PCHS.
However, the PCHS does charge for medication, vaccines and medical supplies which must be paid for at the time of the visit via Visa, Mastercard or check. The PCHS does not accept Discover, American Express or cash.
