Join the Clery Interns and Being Barnard for the 18th Annual Clery Lecture Series. This year, the Clery Interns explored healing over a lifetime and different pathways to justice. One of the pathways is restorative justice. “Restorative justice is not just a set of practices, it is a way of thinking about and approaching crime or harm” (Williamsen and Wessell, 2023).
In 2019, Marlee's sexual assault case became the first in North America to conclude with restorative justice through the courts. She fought for the man who raped her to go to therapy instead of criminal trial and eventually, they met in an 8-hour restorative circle. In this program, Marlee takes a vulnerable and educational approach to discuss this alternative to the punitive system. The focus throughout the program is to create a vision of justice that is synonymous with healing. In an environment rooted in hope and empowerment, listeners learn about this justice pathway that breaks cycles of harm and ignites cycles of healing.
Join us here for a support resource space.

April 12th - The 17th Annual Clery Lecture Series: The Importance of Intersectionality: Considering the Role of Diverse Identities in the Dialogue on Sexual Assault
Time: Reception begins at 6:30 P, and Main Event begins at 7 PM
Location: Hybrid Format - Zoom and James Room (4th Floor Barnard Hall)
As part of the Jeanne Clery Lecture Series, the 17th annual lecture will focus on the broad theme of "believe survivors" in the context of intersectionality. Although recently there has been much discourse centering on the narratives of individuals who have experienced sexual violence, not a lot of it has considered how marginalized communities are less likely to have their voices heard and be doubly harmed by this type of violence. Let's explore whether and in what ways certain identities have a greater advantage in accessing resources.
The Clery Center is a helpful resource for anyone who has experienced sexual violence seeking a trauma-informed approach. Combining this trauma-informed approach with perspectives centered on intersectionality will hopefully provide a more nuanced approach to addressing the complex, multifaceted layers of sexual assault for different individuals holding diverse identities.
The Jeanne Clery Lecture series was established by Constance Clery BC ‘53 and Howard Clery, Jr in memory of their daughter, Jeanne Clery.

March 31 - Barnard Bold Conference
Session Title: Violence Prevention in the Classroom: An Intersectional Approach
Time: 2-3 PM
Location: Milistein LL Classroom
Although in recent years there has been much discourse centering on the narratives of individuals who have experienced sexual violence, marginalized groups are still much less likely to have their voices heard. The fact that these groups have been doubly harmed by this type of violence has been greatly underemphasized.
The Clery Interns will be hosting the annual Clery Lecture series on this theme of intersectionality within the larger dialogue on sexual assault in April, and we hope that this session during the Bold Conference will serve as a great starting point for getting students to consider the nuanced nature of sexual violence and explore ways we can adopt a trauma-informed approach centered on intersectionality within the classroom.

How to Be an Ally When You Witness Online Abuse w/ Hollaback!
Location: Virtual - Zoom
As more of our personal and professional lives go digital, online hate and harassment are on the rise. Each and every one of us can be an ally. We’ll give you the tools you need to intervene safely and effectively in online abuse using Hollaback!’s 5D’s of bystander intervention. First, we’ll talk through what online harassment is and how to identify abusive tactics. We’ll discuss the severe impact online abuse can have – on well being, livelihoods, and free expression – and how it’s drowning out voices that urgently need to be heard in public discourse. Then we’ll share concrete strategies for how to distract, delegate, document, delay, or directly intervene in a way that is safe, effective, and centered on the needs of the person being targeted. We’ll have time to practice so you can leave feeling more confident intervening the next time you see someone being abused online.
This workshop is open to the entire Barnard and Columbia community, including staff, faculty, and alumni. Please register at the link.

Consent in the Arts
Diana Center
Conversations about consent and boundaries have increased considerably in the wake of the #MeToo movement. Arts professionals of all disciplines, whose work often involves high levels of intimacy and vulnerability, have been grappling with how to maintain artistic vision while also honoring the boundaries and life experiences of those involved in productions. Join Being Barnard as we consider our roles as student artists and leaders and develop ways of creating a safer and more accountable community while increasing the depth of the art we present. Portions of this program will be hands-on and movement based (with participants consent). Please arrive prepared to move if you wish to participate in those portions of the workshop to whatever extent feels comfortable to you.
