2016 Winter Break Housing

All Barnard residence halls will be closed for Winter Break between 9am on Friday, December 23, 2016, through 9am on Wednesday, January 11, 2017.

Students with valid needs may apply for Winter Break Housing. The deadline to apply for Winter Break Housing and provide documentation (see below) is 4pm on Monday, December 5, 2016.

Winter Break Housing is not guaranteed and approval should not be assumed. Students should plan accordingly in case their request is denied. Students must provide documentation to support their request to be in residence during the break.

Note: Plimpton Hall will be the only residence hall open for approved students between 9am Friday, December 23, 2016, and 9am Sunday, January 8, 2017.

Note: Students who only need to apply for housing starting January 8, 2017 or later, should apply for Early Winter Return instead.

Note: Approved students are limited to signing in 1 guest at time until the residence halls officially reopen for the Spring on Wednesday, January 11, 2017. Guests are limited to an overnight stay of one night. Minors (guests 16 years old or younger) are not permitted to enter during Winter Break.

Eligibility for Winter Break Housing

Students will be considered only if they:

  • Are in good standing with the College & University.
    • Students must not be on any type of probation (academic or disciplinary)
    • Students must have paid or have a valid payment plan in place for their Spring bill (which is due December 1, 2016)
  • Have a campus housing assignment for both Fall 2016 and Spring 2017
    • Students returning from a Fall semester abroad, students readmitted to the College for the Spring, and/or students new to campus housing for the Spring are not eligible for Winter Break Housing Return (these students may start moving in on Saturday, January 14, 2017).

  • Deadline for all forms is 4pm Monday, December 5, 2016
  • All requests must include documentation supporting the request. Examples include:
    • The Coach / Supervisor / Advisor form (see above)
    • A written personal statement
  • All requests will be reviewed on an individual basis.
  • Approval should not be assumed and is not guaranteed.
  • Students should plan accordingly in case their request is not approved.
  • Late applications are likely not to be approved (and would carry a $50 late fee if approved)

CU students living at Barnard who wish to be in Winter Break Housing must also apply before the deadline and have a valid reason in order to be approved. Approval is not automatic and not guaranteed.

 

Res Halls open during Winter Break

Plimpton Hall will be the only residence hall open for approved students between 9am Friday, December 23, 2016, and 9am Sunday, January 8, 2017.

Note: Students who only need to apply for housing starting January 8, 2017 or later, should apply for Early Winter Return instead.

Students who do not have a Spring 2017 room assignment in Plimpton Hall and wish to be in residence prior to January 8, 2017, will need to secure permission to stay in the Spring 2017 room assignment room of a Plimpton resident by submitting a Plimpton Host Room Form.

When the other residence halls reopen for approved students at 9am on Sunday, January 8, 2017, non-Plimpton residents continuing in Winter Break Housing past this date/time must relocate to their Spring 2017 room assignment and check out of Plimpton by 5pm (turn in the Host Room keys to the Front Desk using a check-out envelope).

Fee for Winter Break Housing

  • $400 fee* for approved students
  • Fee must be paid by January 1, 2017 (will be put on student account in late December)
  • Students who wish to be considered for a waiver or reduction of fee should provide a rational in their personal statement included with the application for Winter Break Housing
  • Waivers or reductions of the fee are not automatic and not guaranteed.

* CU students living at Barnard approved for Winter Break Housing will not be charged the Winter Break fee, but must apply before the deadline and have a valid reason to request to return early in order to be approved. Approval is not automatic.

 

Approval Timeline

  • Should receive a response by 9pm Tuesday, December 13, 2016.

 

Cancelling Winter Break Housing

  • May cancel without a fee through 4pm Wednesday, December 21, 2016 (email housing@barnard.edu to cancel)
  • No refunds of fee after that date

 

Winter Break ID Stickers & Keys for Non-Plimpton Residents

Students who are approved for Winter Break Housing:

  • Must sign for Winter Break ID Sticker at the Res Life office
    • Available between 10am Tuesday, December 20, and 4pm on Thursday, December 22, 2016
    • No Sticker = No Entry
  • Students who got permission to stay in another student’s Plimpton room must sign for a room key
    • Available between 10am Tuesday, December 20, and 4pm on Thursday, December 22, 2016
    • Plimpton residents may not give their own room keys to students who will be staying in their room

 

Information & Policies for Students Approved for Winter Break Housing

  • Res Hall officially closed from 9am on Friday, December 23, 2016, through 9am on Wednesday, January 11, 2017.
  • Occupancy is generally minimal during Winter Break. As always, students should take safety and security precautions by locking room/suite doors. It is recommended that students learn which friends/neighbors will be nearby during the early return week.
  • Public Safety is available 24/7. For emergencies, call 212-854-6666. For non-emergency inquiries, please call 212-854-3362.
  • There is an on-call Residential Life Hall Director and Associate Director 24 hours/day during the break. You can contact the on-call Res Life staff via Barnard Public Safety.
  • Approved students are required to have a valid Winter Break sticker on their ID to gain entrance into the residence halls during this period. No sticker = no entry.
  • Students are limited to a maximum of 1 guest at a time during Winter Break.
  • Barnard or CU@BC students who did not receive permission for Winter Break would count as guests.
  • Students may not sign in other students who were not approved for Winter Break or to return early for the purpose of allowing them access to their rooms.
  • No guests 16 years old and younger (including siblings) will be permitted during Winter Break.
  • No guests may not stay overnight for more than one night during Winter Break.
  • Guests must be escorted at all times. If you have a guest, you must meet them at the front desk, sign them in, and escort them to your room. When your guest leaves, you must escort them back to the desk to sign out.
  • Disciplinary incidents and/or any violations of Residential Life or College policy can result in approval for Winter Break Housing being revoked, i.e. students may be required to immediately leave campus.
  • Public Safety Shuttle: Shuttle service provided to students on a "call for service" basis. To "call for service" during a scheduled break, students should call Public Safety at 212-854-3362 and request transport from the Dispatcher. Service will be provided to and from College residence halls and CU & Barnard buildings only.
  • Dining Halls: All dining facilities (i.e. Hewitt & the Diana) will be closed over Winter Break. For more information, please visit http://www.campusdish.com/en-US/CSE/Barnard.
  • Mail Services: The mail room will be closed for most of the Winter Break. For more information, please visit http://barnard.edu/mail-print-services.
  • Primary Care Health Service: The Barnard College Primary Care Health Service will be closed for most of Winter Break. For dates, please visit http://barnard.edu/primarycare/. The Clinician On-Call (855-622-1903) is available for urgent medical advice during the break whenever the BC Student Health Service is closed.
  • Barnard students can be seen for urgent health care problems only at Health Services at Columbia's Urgent Care Service, located on the 3rd floor of John Jay Hall, during Winter Break while the Barnard College Student Health Service is closed. Barnard students seen at Health Services at Columbia will be charged a per visit fee of (for hours, please visit http://health.columbia.edu). Students covered by Barnard's Aetna student insurance may file a claim for reimbursement (but must pay up front). Students who opted out of the Barnard insurance plan may be able to file for reimbursement with their own plans.
