Barnard’s 2023 Highlights: A Year in Review

A curated list of some of the College’s most exciting moments from this year.

From hosting the 13th annual Athena Film Festival to celebrating 50 years of the Toddler Center, the graduating Class of 2023, the return of renowned author and alumna Jhumpa Lahiri ’89 as the Millicent C. McIntosh Professor of English and Director of Creative Writing, and welcoming Barnard’s ninth president, Laura Rosenbury, 2023 was a transformative year for Barnard.

January 21 - 22

Sports takes center stage year-round, with sabre stars securing five wins over two days of competitions

March 1

All grown up, the Toddler Center celebrates its 50th anniversary with new digs

March 2 - 5

The Athena Film Festival, the College’s cinematic tradition, returns for its 13th year

May 17

The biggest party of the year, honoring Barnard’s Class of 2023, returned to Radio City Music Hall with keynote speaker and Emmy Award winner Lena Waithe

May - August

Over the summer on campus, Pre-College hosts 550 students and SRI surpasses its own record, again

June 5

Barnard breaks ground on the new Francine LeFrak Foundation Center for Well-Being, with more than 100 community members and donors

June 12

Distinguished scholar Laura Rosenbury officially joins the Barnard community as the College’s ninth President-elect

August 27 - September 3

The New Student Orientation Program (NSOP) once again rolls out a robust move-in program to welcome new and transfer students

September 20

President Rosenbury joined the historic Great Broadway Sweep, NYC’s biggest volunteer clean-up event

October 11

The English Department welcomes Jhumpa Lahiri ’89 back home with a reading and discussion of her newest book

November 17
