Social Media Guidelines and Best Practices
Comment Moderation
Barnard College values the free expression of ideas and welcomes comments and reactions to posts on College social media accounts. The College strives to keep comment sections open and public to the greatest extent possible, while ensuring that conversations remain civil and respectful.
When engaging with Barnard College social media, the following comments will not be tolerated and are subject to deletion:
- Hate speech
- Abusive or threatening language
- Obscene or vulgar language
- Targeted bullying or harassment of individuals
- Commercial posts or spam
- Comments unrelated to the post at hand
- Anything else offensive, threatening, or otherwise in violation of the College’s Policy Against Discrimination and Harassment
The College may restrict comments and messaging at any point when it is deemed necessary and is also at liberty to block any account that violates these guidelines.
Personal Use of Social Media
Barnard’s policies regarding discrimination and harassment can also apply to digital interactions.
On personal social media accounts, Barnard community members should be careful not to create the impression that they are speaking on behalf of the College. Personal communications that may be reasonably seen by a third party as being representative of or conducted on behalf of the College should be clearly noted as being personal and not an official communication from the College.
