The Office of the Provost and Dean of the Faculty is committed to providing administrative leadership and support for the academic programs of Barnard College and to ensuring that the liberal arts education offered to its undergraduates meets the highest standards of quality. To these ends, members of the Provost's Office enable the Barnard faculty to excel in teaching and scholarship, and facilitate the work of the faculty in service and governance.
Goals

Support the faculty, chairs, and directors of academic departments and programs, and academic administrative staff so that collectively they may further Barnard's educational mission and goals

Haley Schoeck was appointed Chief of Staff to the Provost in 2020. She oversees administrative and strategic support for Provost Bell and her senior staff for College initiatives as well as day-to-day operations. She also supports the Provost through the implementation of strategic directions and new initiatives as well as throughout the day-to-day operations of the academic division. Haley is an alumna of Barnard College and holds an M.A. in Higher and Post-Secondary Education from Teachers College, Columbia University.

Alexander Cooley is the Claire Tow Professor of Political Science and Vice Provost for Academic Centers and Libraries at Barnard College, Columbia University, and an Academy Adjunct Faculty member at Chatham House. From 2015 to 2021 he served as the 15th Director of Columbia University's Harriman Institute for the Study of Russia, Eurasia, and Eastern Europe.
Professor Cooley’s research examines how external actors—including emerging powers, international organizations, multinational companies, NGOs, and Western enablers of grand corruption—have influenced the development, governance and sovereignty of the former Soviet states, with a focus on Central Asia and the Caucasus. Cooley is the author and/or editor of eight academic books including, Dictators without Borders: Power and Money in Central Asia (Yale University Press 2017), co-authored with John Heathershaw, and more recently, Exit from Hegemony: the Unravelling of the American Global Order (Oxford University Press, 2020), co-authored with Daniel Nexon.
In addition to his academic research, Professor Cooley serves on several international advisory boards engaged with the region and has testified for the United States Congress and Helsinki Commission. Cooley's opinion pieces have appeared in New York Times, Foreign Policy and Foreign Affairs and his research has been supported by fellowships and grants from the Open Society Foundations, Carnegie Corporation, and the German Marshall Fund of the United States, among others. Cooley earned both his MA and Ph.D. from Columbia University.

Saskia Hamilton is the faculty liaison to the Provost for academic and curricular programs. She manages projects that support curricular innovation, advises on programmatic initiatives, and helps coordinate academic planning and assessment. She helps manage the Committee on Instruction, the Faculty Budget and Planning Committee, and the Faculty Governance and Procedures Committee, among others, and oversees departmental Academic Program Reviews.
Saskia joined the Barnard English Department in 2002, and teaches courses in the history of poetry and poetics, poets’ letters, and poetry writing. She is also the director of Women Poets at Barnard. She is the author of three collections of poetry, As for Dream; Divide These; and Corridor, and has received fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, among others. She is the editor of The Letters of Robert Lowell; The Dolphin Letters, 1970-1979: Elizabeth Hardwick, Robert Lowell, and Their Circle; and The Dolphin: Two Versions, 1972, 1973. She is also the co-editor (with Thomas Travisano) of Words in Air: The Complete Correspondence between Elizabeth Bishop and Robert Lowell. She received her Ph.D. from the Editorial Institute at Boston University.

Sarah Greene manages Barnard Engages New York: Collaborative Partnerships to Promote Sustainable Change, an initiative combining curriculum with public engagement that is funded by the Mellon Foundation. Previously, she managed the Mellon grant Barnard Teaches: Real Place + Digital Access, which supported technology and place-based learning from 2014-2022.
Sarah currently works closely with faculty, administrators, and staff at Barnard and Columbia to support course development and foster partnerships community-based organizations in the New York City area. Sarah received her M.S. in Communications Design from Pratt Institute and has worked at Barnard since 2008.

Chris Barthel oversees the administration of faculty academic reviews and promotions. Reporting to the Provost, he is responsible for managing the administrative support necessary for the preparation of third-year reviews, tenure and promotion cases to the Advisory Committee on Appointments, Tenure, and Promotion (ATP) for all tenure-track, tenured, and full-time reviewed and renewable faculty, including coordination with faculty, departmental chairs, and departmental assistants. He holds a B.A. in History and German Language and Literature from the University of Illinois and a Ph.D. in History from Brown University.

Giorgio DiMauro’s role in the Office of the Provost is to enhance and broaden Barnard’s engagement with the world. He supports faculty interested in expanding their teaching and research to include global partners and perspectives, both internationally as well as through the rich global networks of New York City. He helps to organize and fund faculty-led programs abroad, negotiate agreements with international partners, and provide travel advice and emergency support for faculty and students abroad. Giorgio is the faculty liaison for the Fulbright Scholars Program and the Responsible Officer (RO) for all international scholars and faculty coming to Barnard, providing visa processing and local support. He oversees the study abroad process for students and is available for advising appointments at barnardglobal.youcanbook.me. Giorgio acts as the chair of the Faculty Committee on Internationalization and is the Steering Committee Co-Chair for Barnard’s Middle States reaccreditation process.
Giorgio comes to Barnard from Rutgers University, where he directed the Center for Global Education and taught in the Program for Russian and East European Languages and Literatures. Prior to that he worked in the Office of International Programs at Princeton and Harvard Universities. He holds a Ph.D. in Slavic Languages and Literatures from Harvard University and an A.B. in Russian Literature from Reed College.

Krista is responsible for leading semester and academic year study abroad opportunities at Barnard. This includes advising and supporting students in all phases of their study abroad experience. She curates Barnard’s portfolio of approved study abroad programs and maintains relationships with international partners. She also works closely with the Associate Provost to develop and promote faculty-led programs abroad. Krista comes most recently from Daemen College where she served as the Assistant Director of Global Programs, managing study abroad and advising F-1 international students as a Designated School Official. Prior to that she worked as a Regional Advisor in the Education Abroad Program office at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Krista completed her Ed.M. in Higher Education Administration from the University at Buffalo. She received her B.A. in International Studies from Pepperdine University where she spent a semester studying abroad in Hong Kong followed by a semester in London.

Reshmi Mukherjee is the Helen Goodhart Altschul Professor of Physics & Astronomy at Barnard College and the Vice Provost of Academic Research and Centers. She joined the Barnard faculty in 1997. Professor Mukherjee received her B.S. from Presidency College, University of Calcutta and her M.A., MPhil, and Ph.D. degrees from Columbia University. She was previously a postdoctoral research scientist at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and McGill University. In addition to being a professor at Barnard, she has served as chair of Physics & Astronomy at Barnard College.
Professor Mukherjee's research interests are in high-energy astrophysics and astro-particle physics. One of her current projects is VERITAS (Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System), located in southern Arizona. VERITAS is a major ground-based gamma-ray observatory that enables the study of extragalactic and galactic high energy gamma-ray sources. The VERITAS collaboration uses an array of mirrors at night to detect the quick flashes of blue Cherenkov light that result from gamma-ray air showers. Prof. Mukherjee uses VERITAS to study active galaxies in the Universe, thought to be powered by super-massive black holes at their centers. Until 2019, Mukherjee was the Spokesperson of VERITAS. Professor Mukherjee is currently the PI of an NSF MRI grant to upgrade the camera of a novel high energy gamma-ray telescope being developed in Arizona for a future, next-generation telescope. Her research group has participation from several undergraduate students at Barnard College.
As Vice Provost of Academic Research and Centers, Professor Mukherjee is a key faculty liaison to the Provost with leadership responsibility for managing internal and sponsored research grants and the Academic Centers in the Milstein Center, with secondary responsibility for faculty governance. The Vice Provost of Academic Research and Centers is also responsible for advising and supporting the Provost on Barnard's long-term strategy for the research in sciences, social sciences, humanities, and the arts.

Jane Holmes is responsible for the planning and budgeting of the academic division of the College. In her role she works closely with department chairs and directors of programs and centers to assess and advocate for the financial needs of the academic division. Previously, Jane worked as the Associate Director of International Affairs and Non-JD Programs at Fordham Law School. Before earning her M.B.A., Jane served in several roles at Barnard including Senior Academic Affairs Coordinator in the Office of the Provost. Jane holds a B.A. and an M.B.A. from Fordham University.

Bobby O’Rourke supports the Provost's Office by assisting in budget development, instructor payroll management, faculty housing and office allocation, and processing financial transactions. He provides administrative support for the Grants Committee, and manages a number of the academic department assistants. Bobby received his A.A. in Liberal Studies from Union County College, his B.A. in English from Rutgers University, and his M.A. in Creative Writing and Literature for Educators from Fairleigh Dickinson University.
