From documenting protests to illustrating interviews, personal and political minicomics give you the power to witness your world. DIY media create a platform for people who don't have access to corporate and mainstream publishing to share what they experience and how it makes them feel. Declaring one's home on the fifth estate is a longtime strategy of people holding minority and radical opinions.
Comics journalist, author, and editor Sarah Mirk leads this hands-on workshop about creating zines and comics that express voices, perspectives, and big feelings that are often ignored by mainstream media. Sarah, a queer, white, ciswoman, is the author of nonfiction graphic novel Guantanamo Voices: True Stories from the World's Most Infamous Prison, an editor at The Nib, a digital producer at the Center for Investigative Reporting, and a somewhat obsessive zine maker. During this workshop, participants will discuss how nonfiction comics are a powerful format for journalism, take a crack at drawing an interview comic, and create short zines about their own identities.
The zine library, on the 2nd floor of the Milstein Center, is wheelchair accessible, and we look forward to providing any other useful accommodations.
Event registration to come. In the meantime, email zines@barnard.edu for more information.
