Participants will leave this workshop having familiarized themselves with the concepts of implicit bias and microaggression; some basic tools to reduce the impact of implicit bias in decision making; different types of microaggression; most common forms of microaggression in higher education; and potential ways of responding to microaggressions on the spot. The Office of DEI aims to provide an opportunity and a space for staff and faculty to learn directly from each other’s experiences. This workshop is open to all of the staff and faculty members. We encourage each department to send at least one representative. In preparation for the workshop, we encourage participants to take at least one of Harvard University’s Implicit Association Tests (IATs) (~8-10 minutes), and watch the video titled “Microaggressions in the Classroom” (18 minutes), directed by Carla LynDale Carter, Lecturer at the University of North Texas in the Department of Media Arts.
