Dear Barnard community,

We are writing with an update on the ongoing construction work in Barnard Hall. Please note that one additional day of tunnel closure has been scheduled for Monday, June 19 (7am-4pm) to complete the remaining slab demolition work at the lower mezzanine level. Please use alternate routes during this time for access between spaces in Milstein and Hewitt.

In addition, below is more detail on other upcoming work to be expected:

  • Additional work will be mobilizing on the first floor of Barnard Hall next Tuesday, so additional noise/disruption should be expected in the main lobby and corridor.
  • Attic scaffolding work will also begin next week, and additional noise should be expected above the 4th floor offices, classrooms, and James room.
  • Localized lead paint abatement will take place over the next month within designated construction areas prior to installation of new steel, and additional pipe and flooring abatement will occur on the Lower Mezzanine level and in Streng Studio. As with all abatement work on campus, the contractor will be following strict safety protocols in accordance with NYC Department of Buildings and Department of Environmental Protection regulations.
  • As a reminder, steel installation and welding may result in some noticeable odors in the building periodically over the next +/-6 to 8 weeks. Smoke eater machines will be operating during this work to minimize impacts to adjacent areas.
