Dear Barnard Community,

As spring break approaches next week, our construction teams will be mobilizing for some heavier, disruptive work across campus. That work should occur between Saturday, March 9 and Monday, March 18. For those who will be on campus these days, please note details of the work below, especially under the bottom section which outlines work being done on several Barnard residence halls.

BARNARD HALL

  • Barnard Hall lobby closure:  Painting of the lobby vestibule and ceilings will require closure of the lobby and rerouting to the north and south side entrances of the building for access to upper floors. Please note that the north elevator remains out of service for construction; the south entrance should be utilized for elevator access and for connection to the Hewitt dining hall.
  • Demolition at new north entrance: Masonry demolition will occur at the existing Annex entrance door leading to the old gymnasium. The Annex door leading to the existing PE offices and Streng Studio will remain available.
  • Lower level corridors:
  • The corridor between Milstein and Barnard Halls will be closed for the week to allow for additional waterproofing and ceiling work to take place.
  • The west corridor, bathrooms and the dance studio on the lower level will be closed temporarily to accommodate additional infrastructure and finish work.
  • Upper floors: There will be increased contractor presence on the upper floors and attic space to complete HVAC penetrations and ductwork in the southwest corner of the building.
  • Exterior street work: We had delays on the construction work on Claremont Avenue that was shared in an earlier email and had to pause the work. We anticipate that work will begin again this Monday and continue through Friday, March 29.

ALTSCHUL HALL/RDSC PRE-CONSTRUCTION WORK

  • Altschul Hall Window Survey: Select spaces in Altschul Hall will be surveyed for dimensions of existing windows. The spaces have been coordinated with the science faculty and will be protected with plastic tarps and/or masonite as needed. The contractor will take measurements as needed and may require specific windows to be opened or temporarily removed. The windows will be closed/replaced immediately upon the completion of the measurements. Expect the presence of contractors on the science floors (floors 4-13) during these activities.
  • Milbank Hall/119th Street Window Survey: The contractor will be taking measurements of both the interior and exterior of the windows in the southwest face of Milbank Hall. The exterior work will require a boom lift on W. 119 Street at the south face of Milbank Hall to allow the contractor to take measurements of the exterior of the existing window opening. The exterior survey will be conducted on Thursday, March 14 and Friday, March 15. Access to campus via the 119th Street breezeway will be restricted for part of the day on Friday, March 15. Access between Altschul and Milbank via the breezeway will be unaffected. The interior measurements will require access to the south-facing rooms in the southwest portion of Milbank Hall (facing Altschul Hall). The work is not destructive in nature, but will be intrusive for short periods of time as the contractor takes measurements of the window openings.
  • Altschul and Milbank Halls Ambient Noise Survey: A specialist will be accessing select areas in Altschul and Milbank Halls in order to take ambient noise readings in certain rooms and corridors. This survey is not intrusive or destructive in nature. The surveys are scheduled for Monday, March 11, but could be pushed to later in the week in the event of stormy weather that could impact baseline readings.

OTHER CAMPUS CONSTRUCTION

  • Brooks Hall: The contractor will continue with the revised reparative work of the portico, involving the removal and cleaning of limestone pieces from the structure. Additionally, a shed will be constructed on the south end of the designated work area. The Reid gate access control will remain in place. We anticipate low levels of dust and noise.
  • Plimpton Hall: The contractor is scheduled to continue repair work, with contractors expected to be present on the north and south facades on the building. Moderate levels of noise may occur due to drilling activities.
  • 600 W 116th St: The contractor is scheduled to continue and finish the erection of  the protective sidewalk shed on the north and east facades of the building, as well as the west alleyway. Portions of the sidewalk will be periodically closed off to ensure the safety of pedestrians and workers, with designated pathways provided. Please anticipate some inconvenience.
