On September 8, Maria Hinojosa ’84, inaugural Journalist-in-Residence and a member of the Barnard English Department, was honored by the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) with a MALDEF Lifetime Achievement - Excellence in Community Service Award during a gala held in Washington D.C.
 
MALDEF, is the nation’s leading Latino legal civil rights organization, which aims to protect and defend the rights of all Latinos living in the United States, as well as the constitutional rights of all Americans.
 
Hinojosa received this lifetime service award for telling America’s untold stories and bringing to light unsung heroes in America and abroad. As the anchor and managing editor of the long-running weekly NPR show, Latino USA, Hinojosa has informed millions of Americans about the fastest-growing group in our country.
