Constance Alexander Krueger ’53

Constance Alexander Krueger ’53, a trustee emerita who served the College with passion and wisdom for many years, died in November.

When Krueger arrived at Barnard, the campus was bookended by Milbank and Barnard Halls, with what was affectionately referred to as “the jungle” in between. She is known for starting a trend among her relatives—her sister Pamela Schlenger ’57 followed in her footsteps, as did her daughter Abigail Bialer ’85, granddaughters Hannah Bialer ’15 and Rachel Cohen ’03, and grandniece Caroline Axelrod ’07.

Krueger was elected to the College’s Board of Trustees in 1994. During a decade of service, she was vice chair and a member of the executive and development committees and the committee on trustees. She was especially enthusiastic about serving as chair of the committee on buildings, grounds, and environment, describing her tenure as a second education in the intricacies of architecture and building. She was awarded the Alumnae Medal for Service in 2008.

Krueger and her husband, Harvey, whom she met during her first weekend at Barnard, worked to enhance the quality of life at the College, funding the Krueger Lecture Hall in Milbank and making an early contribution to the Diana Center—its plaza bears their name. In 2013, they were honored at the gala for their generous contributions and enduring legacy.
