On April 16, 2023, Chandler Miranda, term assistant professor of education, and Barnard seniors Yasmin Naji ‘23 and Lana Kalfas ‘23, presented a conference paper titled “Racialization of Immigrant Youth in Multiracial School Settings, 2011 to 2022: A Systematic Review of the Research” at the American Educational Research Association (AERA) annual meeting in Chicago, IL. Miranda and her two Barnard co-authors, both education majors, conducted a thorough review of the academic literature to understand how researchers have explored the intersection of race and immigrant education among immigrant students in the United States over the last decade.

The systematic review revealed a growing recognition of the need to examine the racialized experiences of immigrant youth. Miranda and her co-authors assert that future work should consider how pre-migration experiences impact how youth understand race in the U.S. after migration and examine peer interactions between immigrant students from racially and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
