On May 3, 2021, Eduardo Moncadaprofessor of political science, co-authored a new article in the Spanish language journal Revista de Ciencia Politica. The work, titled “Subnational Analysis: Theoretical and Methodological Contributions to Comparative Politics,” demonstrates the capacity of subnational research, which plays an important role in comparative politics, to strengthen theory building by mitigating the problem of “theory stretching.” It also shows the comparative advantage for crafting multilevel theories that provide stronger explanations for outcomes of interest. With regard to methods and study design, this article offers new research strategies and shows how subnational research can be combined fruitfully with a diverse set of widely-used methodologies.

Later this year, Moncada will receive the Clarence Stone Scholar Award, which recognizes up to two young scholars who are making a significant contribution to the study of urban politics.
