The following message was sent to the Barnard community on July 15, 2020:
Dear Members of the Barnard Community,
I write to share the good news that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has rescinded guidance that would have required international students to enroll in in-person courses to remain lawfully present in the United States. This change of course was announced yesterday as a court hearing began on a challenge to the rule by Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. We are proud to have signed on to an amicus brief with other higher education institutions to support this lawsuit.
As I wrote to you earlier this week, the guidance from ICE struck at the heart of the College’s mission and identity: our international students, faculty, and staff are an invaluable part of the diversity of voices and lived experiences that is vital to Barnard’s academic excellence. The overturning of this guidance will allow Barnard’s F-1 visa-holding international students in the U.S., like all other Barnard students, to study remotely this fall if they so choose.
We are pleased with this outcome, but understand that challenges still remain. We are fully committed to supporting our international community at Barnard and abroad, for the fall and beyond.

Les escribo para compartir las buenas noticias de que el Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas (ICE) de EE. UU. ha renunciado la orientación que habría requerido que los estudiantes internacionales se inscriban en cursos en persona para permanecer legalmente presentes en los Estados Unidos. Este cambio se anunció ayer cuando comenzó una audiencia en la corte sobre un desafío a la regla por parte de la Universidad de Harvard y el Instituto de Tecnología de Massachusetts. Estamos orgullosos de haber firmado un breve amicus con otras instituciones de educación superior para apoyar esta demanda.
Como le escribí a principio de esta semana, la guía de ICE fue un golpe al corazón de la misión e identidad del Colegio: nuestros estudiantes internacionales, profesores y personal son una parte invaluable de la diversidad de voces y experiencias vividas que es vital para la excelencia académica de Barnard. La revocación de esta guía permitirá a los estudiantes internacionales con visa F-1 de Barnard, como todos los demás estudiantes en los Estados Unidos, estudiar de forma remota este otoño si así lo desean.
