Currently Studying Abroad for Spring 2025
Students currently studying abroad in a program for which they are paying Barnard tuition (and who were eligible for the Room Selection process before they left) will take part in the 2025 Room Selection process remotely to secure housing for next academic year.
Students will need to submit the Room Selection Intent Form and sign a Housing Agreement. Failure to register and participate in the Room Selection process will lead to loss of guaranteed housing.
Note: students who take a leave of absence during their study abroad program will not be able to take part in the Room Selection process and/or their Fall room assignment will be cancelled. Students may re-apply for campus housing when requesting to return from their leave of absence.
May Study Abroad for Fall 2025 (or Entire Academic Year)
Eligible students who may study abroad for the Fall are required to submit the Room Selection Intent form.
- If you have already been accepted into your program, you can indicate that you're going abroad (and will not take part in the Housing Lottery, etc).
- If you're not 100% sure that you're going abroad, you should take part in the Housing Lottery (or one of the pre-assignment processes, etc)
If you secure a room assignment (or sign up for the Guaranteed List) and then finalize plans to study abroad for the Fall semester, you will need to submit the Housing Cancellation Form by May 1, 2025. Extensions are available for students still waiting to get into their Study Abroad programs.
Housing Applications for Spring 2026
Students abroad for the Fall will be emailed in mid-to-late September to let them know when the Spring Housing Application opens on the Housing Portal. The application deadline is November 1, 2025.
Students will provide ranked room type & building preferences and then will be assigned to available rooms in early January. Students may additionally submit CARDS housing accommodation requests by November 1 if needed.
If I pick into a suite with a group of friends and then cancel for the Fall, can I get that room when I return in the Spring?
Probably not. Students who secure a Fall room assignment during Room Selection then finalize plans to study abroad for the Fall must submit the Housing Cancellation Form. The space that they cancel from will then be assigned to a student on the Guaranteed List (or a new Fall transfer, etc) for the upcoming academic year. The space you picked cannot be kept empty for the Fall semester for you to return to in the Spring.
May Study Abroad for Spring 2026
Students who plan to study abroad in the Spring should participate in the Room Selection process like usual to secure a room assignment for Fall 2025.
After students finalize plans to study abroad for the Spring (starting in late October), they should submit the Housing Cancellation Form to cancel their Spring room assignment (by December 1). Extensions are available for students still waiting for acceptance into their study abroad program.
Students who were eligible for the Room Selection process before going abroad will be able to register while abroad in order to take part in the 2026 Room Selection process to secure housing for the following academic year (2026-27).
