Completing a Study Abroad Program Application
Completing a Study Abroad Program Application
Request an approval/authorization
If your study abroad program application requires a study abroad advisor approval form, home school authorization, or other endorsement from Barnard, the Barnard Global office can provide this on your behalf. In order for approval to be given, students must first begin their Preliminary Barnard Application or Summer Clearance form. Most programs have their forms sent directly through an emailed link. Barnard Global completes approvals on a first come, first served basis, once a student completes the Barnard required application and eligibility is confirmed. Please plan accordingly and allow ample time before your program application deadline for staff to complete your approval.
Please follow the detailed instructions below to receive your completed study abroad approval.
For semester Columbia-led programs
- Start the Preliminary Barnard application for your program and submit it as soon as possible. Note that Barnard students must complete both the Preliminary Barnard application and the Columbia application for their specific program. Barnard students must complete the Columbia application as "Non-Columbia/External" applicants.
- Fall applicants: Once your Preliminary Barnard application has been submitted, Barnard Global will be notified. Barnard Global Staff will then provide the required home school approval form directly on your program application in the CU portal. Spring applicants: Once your Preliminary Barnard application has been reviewed, you will be prompted to submit the date you begin your Columbia program application. Once this step is submitted, Barnard Global will be notified. Barnard Global Staff will then provide the required home school approval form directly on your program application in the CU portal. Please do not email Barnard Global with the home school approval pdf as this is not necessary.
- Allow up to five business days from the date your Preliminary Barnard application is submitted (fall students) or you confirm your Columbia application was started (spring students) for Barnard Global staff to submit the CU approval on your behalf, pending eligibility.
For summer Columbia-led programs
- Submit the Summer Clearance form (required for all Barnard students studying abroad in the summer). Note that Barnard students must complete both the Summer Clearance form and the Columbia application for their specific program. Barnard students must complete the Columbia application as "Non-Columbia/External" applicants.
- Once your Summer Clearance form has been submitted, Barnard Global will be notified. Barnard Global Staff will then provide the required home school approval form directly on your program application in the CU portal. Please do not email Barnard Global with the home school approval pdf as this is not necessary.
- Allow up to five business days from the date your Summer Clearance form is submitted for Barnard Global staff to submit the CU approval on your behalf, pending eligibility.
For semester approved programs
- Complete the Preliminary Barnard application for your program.
- Have the link to your approval form emailed to studyabroad@barnard.edu or the Director of Study Abroad.
- Approvals for the following programs are completed online and it is not necessary to email Barnard Global to obtain yours: Bard, Brown, Boston University, CET, CIEE, IES, IFSA, DIS, LAC Minnesota, Middlebury, NYU, Sea Education, SFS, and SIT.
- A small number of programs require a pdf approval form. After your Preliminary Barnard application has been reviewed, you will be able to upload your required form to the Passportal for completion.
- Allow up to five business days after your request is received for Barnard Global staff to submit the approval on your behalf, pending eligibility.
For petitioned semester programs
- Submit the Petition application by the deadline for your term.
- Petitions must be approved by Barnard Global before a home school approval/authorization may be granted. If your petition is not approved, a home school approval/authorization cannot be completed on your behalf.
- If your petition is approved, allow up to five business days after your request is received for Barnard Global staff to submit the approval on your behalf.
For summer study abroad programs
- Submit the Summer Clearance form (required for all Barnard students studying abroad in the summer).
- The Summer Clearance form includes a space to indicate which type of approval your program requires (portal approval, or pdf). Please follow the instructions to complete this material accordingly.
- Allow up to five business days after your request is received for Barnard Global staff to submit the approval or complete the pdf on your behalf, pending eligibility.
