A trailblazer of experimental verse, Alice Notley ’67 was recognized as one of the most influential poets of her generation
Barnard has graduated an impressive number of pathbreaking women — many of whom are household names, from anthropologist Margaret Mead ’23 and playwright/poet Ntozake Shange ’70 to comedian Joan Rivers ’54 and activist Grace Lee Boggs ’35. But there are countless pioneering alumnae, whose achievements, though lesser known, have made them leaders in their respective professions. We are sharing four women — architect Norma Merrick Sklarek ’50, librarian Jean Blackwell Hutson ’35, CIA spouse advocate Barbara Colby ’42, and the “Godmother of Women’s Health,” Lila Wallis ’47 — who are no longer with us but, without a doubt, are women we all “oughta know.”
"You Oughta Know” was produced in collaboration with the Barnard Archives and Special Collections and Barnard College’s Creative Content team.
