Dear Barnard community,

Construction is now well underway in Barnard Hall for the construction of the Francine A. LeFrak Foundation Center for Well-Being. We thank everyone for your continued patience as heavy work proceeds on the upper and lower floors of the building. In upcoming weeks, you may notice the following additional activities in Barnard Hall, including more noticeable work on the first floor lobby level:

FIRST FLOOR

  • Starting the week of June 12, contractors will be installing temporary walls along the west side of the main corridor and lobby of Barnard Hall.
  • Egress paths and use of the lobby will be maintained during this work, but there will be an increase in noise and contractor presence during this time.
  • Additional activities will be noticeable on the north side of the lobby to mobilize for construction.
  • Temporary walls and protection in the lobby will remain up for the remainder of the summer and into the fall semester.
  • Additional updates will follow as the timeline for more major lobby work this summer is finalized.

UPPER FLOORS

  • Work is ongoing on the second, third, and fourth floors of the building, with temporary walls in place to isolate the majority of construction from occupied spaces.
  • In addition to activities inside these temporary enclosures, there will be 1-2 days of work to route new piping through the second floor LeFrak office corridor on the north side of the building (likely during the week of June 19).
  • Localized steel welding may result in some noticeable odors on the second, third, and fourth floors periodically over the next +/-6 weeks. Smoke eater machines will be operating during this work to minimize impacts to adjacent areas.

ELEVATORS & CORRIDORS

  • Lower level corridor access between Milstein and the Quad will remain closed until end of day Friday for demolition and scaffold erection. Catering or other specific requests for tunnel access may be accommodated during this time.
  • Steel demolition in the lower mezzanine may result in some noticeable burning odors in the stairwell, first floor and lower level corridors through the end of the week. Smoke eater machines are operating to minimize impacts to adjacent areas.
  • Both elevators remain available for use at this time, with the North elevator work to commence in August or later in the summer.
