On August 25, professor of political science Séverine Autesserre was named the 2021 recipient of the Emerging Scholar Award by the International Studies Association (ISA). The award, which was announced on Twitter, comes from the ISA's International Security Studies Section (ISSS), a branch dedicated to supporting the study of national security.
Autesserre was recognized for her extensive research conducted in African war zones, which "has revolutionized the study and practice of peacebuilding, and of security studies more generally," ISSS chair Eugene Gholz wrote in his announcement. The professor's observations on effective, localized peacemaking has been documented in two acclaimed books and a 2015 TED Talk.
In response to the announcement, Autesserre tweeted that she was "humbled — and so absolutely thrilled." The organization plans to officially present the award to Autesserre in 2021 at the ISA's reception in Las Vegas, or in an online ceremony if an in-person option is not possible.
