Sights and Sounds of Barnard: Athletes in Action
Barnard's Got Game: Basketball

Barnard’s 2023 and 131st Commencement is quickly approaching as graduating student-athletes celebrate the end of their final season at the College. During their time on campus, they have balanced the rigor of coursework with training competitively — proving that they work as hard as they play.

As their stories continue to inspire members of the Barnard community, take a look back at the self-discipline, commitment to teamwork, and passion projects that have shaped the last four years of each student-athlete below.

Volleyball

Leading in aces, Vanessa Pan ’23 relied on team support to get through competitions. The neuroscience and anthropology double major has been a distinguished player in the Ivy League since returning to campus in 2021

[We] bond through the tough experience of being D1 athlete[s] at [Barnard] so we have each other’s backs — but we also have a great time together.” —Vanessa Pan

Track and Field

Psychology major Kayla Rae-Gordon ’23 has always been passionate about sports and knew she could pursue her love for weight-throwing at Barnard.

One of the most important lessons in sports is that you get in what you put out, and in order to be the best you can be, you need to be solid in your mind, body, and confidence.” —Kayla Rae-Gordon ’23

Squash

Born in Los Angeles — but raised in Vancouver, Canada — Cindy Cao ’23 spent an energetic childhood immersed in various sports. However, the cellular and molecular biology and English double major soon learned that there was nothing like the experience that squash brought her.

Until I played squash, I didn’t know what a passion should feel like.” —Cindy Cao ’23

Archery

Former archery team captain and neuroscience and behavior major Nidhi Kanchumarthi ’23 was inspired to hit bullseyes by Katniss Everdeen, [the character] from The Hunger Games. While at Barnard, Kanchumarthi was honored as a 2020 All-American and member of the 2020 All-American Academic team.

I’ve met outstanding archers and mentors who make this pursuit meaningful for me. Even though we come from all corners of the world, each with our own unique experiences, we are united in our love for archery.” —Nidhi Kanchumarthi ’23

Track and Field

Film major Anna Jordahl-Henry ’23 always made time for self-care rituals, well-being, and happiness to stay in stride as a high-jumper on the track and field.

Being an athlete at Barnard has shaped my experience in the best way. I have met so many incredible people through my team and the larger athletic community.” —Anna Jordahl-Henry ’23

Lacrosse

It took one campus tour of Barnard for Ingrid Corrigan ’23 to feel at home. The lacrosse defender, as well as a double major in biology and English, welcomed challenges on the field as reminders of her love for learning new things and self-improvement.

Through lacrosse, I am reminded that I am not defined by the struggle or the challenge set before me, I am defined by my response, my ability to fail, learn, and improve.” —Ingrid Corrigan ’23

Fencing

Olympic hopeful and computer science major Yana Botvinnik ’23 relied on balance, consistency, and lifelong friendships as an épée fencer at Barnard.

I have many happy memories connected to the athletics at Barnard. Practices, Zoom calls, late nights at libraries, or team picnics in Central Park — all these events make my college experience special.” —Yana Botvinnik ’23
