Concurrent Enrollment Policy
Effective:
November 4, 2024
Executive Summary:
This policy establishes a requirement that Barnard students will be matriculated in only one degree program at a time. Exceptions to this policy will be made for existing dual enrollment programs at Barnard. Barnard students may register at other accredited higher education institutions as visiting, non-degree-seeking students during the summer term or while on an approved leave of absence, although transferability of credits must be determined by the Registrar’s Office.
Reason for the Policy:
This policy codifies Barnard’s expectation that students will be matriculated in one degree program at a time while in academic residence at Barnard, with some specific exceptions made for students in established double-degree or cross-registration programs. This policy also distinguishes between credits obtained as a visiting student and as a degree-seeking student at other institutions. In addition, this policy establishes guidelines for students who have transferred from Barnard and are seeking return.
Who Is Responsible for This Policy:
- Responsible Administrator(s): Dean for Academic Planning & Class Advising
Responsible Office(s): Dean of the College, Deans’ Office for Advising & Support
Who Is Governed by This Policy:
- Barnard students
Definitions (if applicable):
- Academic Residence: Being enrolled at Barnard College for a full-time (fall or spring) semester. Courses taken at Columbia University during the fall and spring terms (excluding summer) are considered in academic residence, as are courses taken as part of an approved study abroad program.
- Concurrent Enrollment: Enrolling in courses at another higher education institution in a particular academic term while being enrolled as a Barnard student.
- Full-Time Enrollment: Successful registration for and completion of a minimum of 12 credits per semester (fall or spring).
- Leave of Absence: Students who are on an approved leave of absence have notified Barnard of their intention to take a leave of absence for personal or medical reasons and have followed the proper approval process, as stated on Barnard’s Leaves and Returns website.
- Students Who Have Transferred: Students who matriculated at Barnard and have since transferred to another institution as a degree-seeking student. These students may not return to Barnard while still matriculated at another institution.
Policy Statement:
Currently enrolled Barnard students may not be enrolled in courses at Barnard and at another higher-education institution concurrently during the fall and spring terms. Exceptions are made for students accepted into Barnard’s existing dual-enrollment programs, including the Jewish Theological Seminary double-degree program and the 4+1 Pathways programs, as well as students registering under Barnard’s existing cross-registration agreements (including those with the Manhattan School of Music, the Juilliard School, and the cross-registration agreement with programs within Columbia University).
Except for those students participating in the programs listed above, a Barnard student may only be enrolled as a degree-seeking student at Barnard College from the time they matriculate at Barnard until they either graduate or officially withdraw from the College.
During the summer term, Barnard students may register at other accredited higher education institutions as visiting, non-degree-seeking students but must have the courses approved to ensure that the credits will transfer. Students on a leave of absence from Barnard may enroll at another institution as a visiting or non-degree-seeking student and can request transfer credit with approval from the Registrar’s Office, with a maximum of nine credits per semester. (Students on required leave of absence may be required to transfer more credit and should reference the terms of their required leave.) Students who wish to enroll as degree-seeking students at another college or university need to fully withdraw from Barnard College before doing so.
Procedure:
- Students enrolled in Barnard’s dual-degree programs, or taking courses through existing cross-registration agreements, should follow the registration process for those programs.
- Students who would like to enroll at another institution for credit during the summer term should seek preapproval for transfer credit by completing the “Summer Course Approval” process in Slate. This includes students planning to enroll at Columbia University during the summer term.
- Students who would like to enroll at another institution as a nonmatriculated visiting student for credit during a leave of absence should seek preapproval for transfer credit by completing the “Approval for Courses Taken While on Leave of Absence” process in Slate.
Failure to Comply With This Policy (if applicable):
Students who enroll as a degree-seeking student at both Barnard and at another institution will be required to either withdraw from Barnard or to withdraw from the other institution.
