Spring 2026 Special Enrollment Procedures

Overview

The following is a list of the spring 2026 Barnard English courses that have special enrollment procedures. The need for special enrollment as well as how to do so is also stated in each course's course description in the Online Catalogue.

ENGL BC1249 AI Literacy in Practice: From Understanding to Responsible Application	50 students	Interested students must join the waitlist, priority to First-Year Barnard and Columbia students.
ENFL BC3001 Black Speculative Fiction	24 students	First priority to senior BC/CU Film Studies majors.
ENGL BC3104 The Art of the Essay (all sections)	12 students	Enrolled and interested students MUST attend the first day of class.
ENGL BC3121 First-Year Public Speaking section 1	14 students	This section is for Barnard first year students only; attend the first day of class to receive instructor permission. Permission will NOT be granted in advance.
ENGL BC3121 First-Year Public Speaking section 2	14 students	This section is for all undergraduate students, with preference to juniors and seniors; attend the first day of class to receive instructor permission. Permission will NOT be granted in advance.
ENGL BC3160 The English Colloquium (all sections)	12 students	Open only to junior and senior Barnard English majors. New junior Barnard transfer students who are not yet able to declare an English major will be able to register during their first registration week.

Courses that Require Instructor Permission

ENGL BC3121 First-Year Public Speaking section 1	This section is for Barnard first year students only; attend the first day of class to receive instructor permission. Permission will NOT be granted in advance.
ENGL BC3121 Public Speaking section 2	Enrollment limited to 14 students. This section is for all undergraduate students, with preference to juniors and seniors; attend the first day of class to receive instructor permission. Permission will NOT be granted in advance.

Courses that Require a Writing Sample as an Application to Apply

A writing sample is required as an application to apply to all Barnard creative writing courses. As space is limited in creative writing courses, not all students who apply are guaranteed admittance.

Students are unable to self-register for Barnard creative writing courses. Interested students who have submitted writing samples may put the course on their online schedule, which will automatically place them on the wait list. If they are accepted, the professor will take them off the wait list, but until that time no one is officially registered for the class.

The Spring 2026 submission deadline for all creative writing courses is 11:59 pm ET Monday, December 29, 2025. Please follow the writing sample directions here to apply.

Admission lists will be sent to applicants' emails as the department receives them from instructors. If an admission list is not sent for a class before its first meeting, attend it.

Please note: if you are accepted into a creative writing course, attendance at the first meeting of the course is mandatory. If you do not show up for the first class, your spot may be given to someone else.

Courses Requiring Their Own Application Process

ENGL BC3102 Academic Writing Intensive	Open only to Barnard students in their second or third year who would benefit from extra writing support. To be considered for the course, please send a recent writing sample to vcondill@barnard.edu, ideally from your First-Year Writing or First-Year Seminar course, or any other writing-intensive humanities or social sciences course at Barnard (no lab reports please).
