FLI Signature Programming
FLI Community Group
In partnership with Furman Counseling Center, this support group offers a space for FLI students to connect and share as they navigate through their Barnard journey. During the FLI community group we discuss various topics including: impostor syndrome, encouraging help seeking behavior, navigating young adulthood, managing stress and much more.
FLI Legacy Night
First-Generation Awareness Day is celebrated annually on November 8 to commemorate the signing of the Higher Education Act (HEA) of 1965. This act aimed to level the playing field for Americans from minority and low-income backgrounds. The HEA helped establish federal grants and loan programs to make higher education more accessible—having a significant impact on first-generation and low-income students across the nation.
This annual event fosters a sense of pride in the first-generation student identity and encourages students to reflect on their personal journeys. The event featured four FLI (First-Generation, Low-Income) student speakers—one from each class year—who shared their challenges and successes as the first in their families to attend college. In addition, each speaker reflected on the legacy they hope to leave behind and the impact they wish to have on their network of family and friends.
Planning for a FLI Summer
Access Barnard is committed to helping every student reach their personal best. Our goal is for students to thrive not only in the classroom but also beyond the academic setting. Internships are a vital part of the undergraduate experience, and we encourage all students to take the leap and pursue meaningful opportunities.
We recognize that the internship search can feel daunting and often leads to feelings of doubt, uncertainty, and stress. To ease this process, the Access Barnard team has developed programs designed to help students:
- begin the internship search early,
- network with peers about internship opportunities, and
- utilize campus resources to prepare strong internship applications—among other support services.
Efforts throughout the year to help student prepare for internship search process:
Planning for FLI Summer Part I
A program where a panel of students were invited to speak about their previous internship experience. Students provided advice on how they found their internship and ways they prepared for interviews. Panelists also reflected on skills they acquired and how they built relationships with their supervisors. Students also reflected on creating a budget to help them spend wisely with their summer earnings.
Planning for FLI Summer Part II
An event to help students polish their networking skills. Students who were in the midst of searching for internships had the opportunity to network with upperclass students about their previous experience and receive words of wisdom.
Study Abroad Peer Networking Night
An event geared towards first-years and sophomores interested in studying abroad. Students have the opportunity to network and learn from seniors who have completed study abroad programs from various locations around the world. Additionally, staff members from the Barnard Global Office are present to answer questions about the study abroad process.
