Access Barnard Peer Mentoring Program
Peer mentoring is widely considered a high-impact practice for student success. Peer mentoring has been shown to enhance students' sense of belonging and satisfaction with their college experience and enhance psycho-social belonging. For students new to the college experience, peer mentors have been shown to be indispensable to the transition, particularly for first-generation students. Access Barnard Peer Mentors help students identify their needs and connect them to institutional resources.
For the 2024-2025 academic year the following number of FLI students participated in the peer mentoring program:
- 65 FLI Mentors
- 92 FLI Mentees
First-Year Access Barnard (FAB) Program
The FAB program is a small cohort of first-year students from within the Access Barnard community. The program strives to build a community of engaged Access Barnard first-years who value advising, making stronger community connections, pre-professional exploration, and service. We offer heightened support during the transition to college throughout the first year. FAB helps a student.
For the 2024-2025 academic year we had 5 FLI students who participated in the FAB program. Here are some direct quotes from FLI participants on how the FAB program made an impact on their first-year at Barnard.
“Honestly, just that I’m super grateful for FAB and everything it gave me. It really helped me start my Barnard experience feeling supported and connected, which made such a big difference. I think the program does a great job balancing professional preparation with building real community, which is something that’s not easy to do. Thank you for putting so much care into it!”
“FAB and AB have felt like the only place where people are real and I can be myself and speak freely about how I feel about the things that are happening on campus. AB talks the talk and walks the walk when it comes to building community, and for that it is infinitely valuable.”
FLI & Study Abroad
Studying abroad offers college students a myriad of benefits, both professionally and developmentally. It broadens students’ perspectives and exposes them to different cultures, languages, and opportunities. Barnard’s financial aid can be transferred to foreign institutions for study abroad. Access Barnard has been making strides to increase the number of first-generation students studying abroad by offering dedicated programming and robust study abroad advising sessions to promote the experience.
