The Office of the Provost hosts an election discussion series with a worldview
This winter, nearly 100 years after writer and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston (Class of 1928) stepped onto Barnard’s campus, the College will hold the inaugural, two-day Zora Neale Hurston Summit (January 31 – February 1, 2025). This multidisciplinary event, organized and led by the Zora Neale Hurston Trust, will bring together Hurston’s family, fans, and scholars from across the community and Harlem to engage with the author’s work.
“The Zora Neale Hurston Trust is deeply honored to host its inaugural summit at Barnard College, an institution intimately connected to Zora’s legacy as an anthropologist, playwright, and literary icon,” says Rae Chesny, director of programs at the Zora Neale Hurston Trust. “This partnership offers a profound opportunity to symbolically welcome Zora back home while ushering in a new chapter of her enduring legacy.”
Attendees will have virtual access to Hurston’s extensive Library of Congress archival collection, and the schedule will feature panel discussions, presentations, and workshops with experts, including Barnard’s own Monica L. Miller, chair and professor of Africana studies, Northeastern University professor and Hurston scholar Carla Kaplan, and National Book Award-winning author Ibram X. Kendi.
