A Day of Celebration

Exceptional leaders who have shaped education, fashion, health care, and humanitarian work joined the Class of 2017 to celebrate at this year’s 125th Commencement. Dr. Joanne Liu, the international president of Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) and associate professor of medicine at the University of Montreal, delivered the keynote address, in which she discussed the lessons of imperfection. Liu received Barnard’s medal of distinction alongside Smithsonian National Museum of African Art director Johnnetta Betsch Cole, legendary fashion designer and philanthropist Diane von Furstenberg, and best- selling author and founder of Women for Women International Zainab Salbi. •
