On April 30, 2022, Ralph Ghoche, assistant professor of architecture, published an interview with architect Joyce Hwang in Les Cahiers: Journal for the Study of Architecture, Urbanism and Landscape. The interview, titled “Designing for Non-Humans,” analyzes Hwang’s recent work designing animal habitats.

Much of Hwang’s body of work focuses on the relationship between her designed environment and the biodiversity under urbanization, and Professor Ghoche explores how keen observation helps architects account for the needs of non-human species in projects that advocate for conservation and environmental policies while delving into Hwang’s prioritization of animal preferences. Ghoche queried Hwang about how collaboration with environmental experts and various iterations contributes to her final creations. He also asked her to elaborate on the complex relationship between human and non-human animals.
