Dear Barnard Community,
A warm welcome to all of you!
Every academic year begins with excitement, but this year brings me an additional measure of energy and real inspiration — not despite the challenges of 2020 but precisely because of what I have seen in all of you over the past six months.
Our amazing staff has done the impossible, not just once but over and over again. They have poured themselves into Barnard, making it possible for our scholars and students to carry out the mission of the College, with a dedication that can’t help but make us all try to do more.
Our faculty are among the best scholar-teachers in all of higher education. What has redoubled my admiration has been watching them find opportunity at this moment of historic challenge. Their offerings this year remind us that the questions we face as a nation and a world have never been more profound and that the tools of an education across the arts and sciences have the power to find answers and change lives.
And then there are our students. Welcome, Class of 2024 and new transfer students! Your credentials are impressive; what moves me more is the spirit with which you are venturing into what comes next. That spirit will fuel the great intellectual adventure ahead of you, and it will propel you to a life of purpose and action. To our returning students, you have taught me anew, on almost a daily basis, what it means to be part of the Barnard community. You take your intellectual quest seriously and pursue it with a powerful vision of making a difference. And you do all of that while caring for one another — that compassion has been a hallmark of your approach to 2020.
We begin this fall largely remote from one another. But throughout this semester, we plan on phasing in use of our campus. Our science faculty have already restarted research in their laboratories, and our goal, assuming local COVID-19 conditions and projections remain favorable, is to slowly begin allowing student access to labs, studios, and other campus facilities. Our planning for a safe return to on-campus residence and classes continues, and I hope to make an announcement about the Spring semester by the end of October, with another check-in before final bills are due in December, to account for any changes in external conditions.
Roughly 30% of our students — those living in Morningside Heights and across the city — are participating in the College’s comprehensive testing program, which includes weekly testing for COVID-19. Our testing program is a vital layer of safety and gives us further data and experience with managing this disease. It is important to mention that all students, faculty, and staff (whether or not you are residing in the area) must sign the Community Pledge that outlines our collective responsibility of care and our commitment to complying with federal, state, and local health requirements. For those of us in the more local area, I ask that you be extremely conscious of how your actions — from wearing masks to observing social distancing and gathering guidelines — affect the Morningside Heights and Harlem communities. We have a responsibility to keep each other safe and healthy.
We’ve written before on several occasions about the ambitious curricular inquiry that lies ahead this year, especially around addressing society’s most urgent problems. I’ve also written to you about the hard and hopeful work going on at all levels of the College as we redouble efforts to fight racism and bolster equity and inclusion. You will hear more and have opportunities to become engaged in this work, which is at the very core of our mission, as the semester proceeds. This year will be, and should be, shaped by the powerful forces at work around us and the demands they make on us all.
I am particularly excited this year about our focus on well-being — a goal we elevated with the launch of Feel Well, Do Well and one that is even more important now. In the coming months, we will have exciting news about a significant new set of initiatives the College will take to ensure that we bring the expertise, resources, and best practices to meet each of you where you are and provide the wraparound support you need for your physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
Of course, one key element of our well-being during remote learning will be in finding ways to engage with our work, programs, and one another. Students, you have some wonderful opportunities to dive in through the next days and weeks. Look out for announcements through email, the new Barnard 411 newsletter, and on social media.
And I hope the entire community will join me on Thursday, Sept. 17, 2020, at 4:30 p.m. EDT for the 2020 Convocation, as we welcome the new members of the student body to Barnard’s rich academic tradition. The keynote address will be delivered by visionary journalist and novelist Suki Kim ’92, who lived and worked undercover in North Korea and shared her revelations with the world in her bestselling book Without You, There Is No Us: Undercover Among the Sons of North Korea’s Elite.
This won’t be a simple year, for any of us. But it holds so much promise, and there is no better place to take advantage of that opportunity than Barnard. I hope you share my enthusiasm for what lies ahead, and I ask you all to support and care for one another in this remarkable time. As individuals, and as a community, you are what makes Barnard strong.

¡Una cálida bienvenida a todos ustedes!
Cada año académico comienza con entusiasmo, pero este año me brinda una medida adicional de energía e inspiración real, no a pesar de los desafíos del 2020, sino precisamente por lo que he visto en todos ustedes durante los últimos seis meses.
Nuestro increíble personal ha hecho lo imposible, no solo una vez, sino una y otra vez. Se han volcado en Barnard, haciendo posible que nuestros académicos y estudiantes lleven a cabo la misión del colegio, con una dedicación que no puede evitar hacer que todos intentemos hacer más.
Nuestra facultad se encuentra entre los mejores profesores académicos de toda la educación superior. Lo que ha redoblado mi admiración, verlos encontrar oportunidades en este momento de desafío histórico. Nuestra facultad de ciencias ya ha iniciado la investigación en sus laboratorios y nuestro objetivo, asumiendo que las condiciones y proyecciones locales de COVID-19 sigan siendo favorables, es comenzar lentamente a permitir el acceso de los estudiantes a los laboratorios estudios y otras instalaciones del campus. Hemos escrito antes en varias ocasiones sobre la ambiciosa investigación curricular que se avecina este año, especialmente en torno a abordar los problemas más urgentes de la sociedad.
