Fall 2020 Auditions
Auditions for Fall 2020 will be significantly different than in the past, in large part due to the challenges posed by health and safety requirements. The Department will be holding online auditions ONLY for the two fall shows, Electra, directed by Javier González, and Stupid Fucking Bird, directed by Colette Robert.
There will be a Zoom meeting Tuesday 8 September at 6pm to open auditions for the shows, and to discuss acting classes and other departmental matters. Everyone interested in auditioning for shows, attending an acting class, or working on backstage crew should attend.
There is one form: you fill this form out to apply for an acting class, and /or if you are planning to audition for shows in the fall semester. If you are planning to audition for shows then you must submit the form by 5pm Tuesday September 8. If you are auditioning for shows and applying for an acting class, you must submit the form by 5pm Tuesday, September 8. If you are not auditioning for shows, and are only applying for acting classes, you may submit the form no later than 10am September 9. All times are EDT.
1. Acting Classes.
All students who want to take an acting class must fill out the Google form here.
If you do not submit this form you will not be placed in an acting class.
The faculty will meet to place students in classes and the rosters of each class will be announced by the evening, so that classes meeting Thursday and Friday can be met. Students who may have registered for an acting class prior to auditions will be dropped from the class unless they have applied for it and are placed in it.
The form notes that all first-year students will be placed in Acting I; all transfer and second-year and beyond students who have not taken an acting class at the college level should apply for Acting I. Students who have taken an acting course other than Acting the Musical Scene or Acting the Song will be approved for any Acting II course.
Students should rank order their choices, first, second, third.
Specific information:
Mana Allen’s Acting II course will be focusing on Sondheim; students are expected to have taken either Acting the Song or Acting the Musical Scene, or to have had specific musical theatre experience at the college level or beyond. If you are applying for that course, please be certain to note background on the form. Students who wish to submit a brief—1 minute maximum—audio recording are encouraged to do so. Please email Mana Allen with this information when you submit the Audition form: manaallen@verizon.net.
Kyle deCamp’s Acting II Solo Performance Course: if you have not taken an acting course at the college level, you should be planning to take Acting I. However, if you have specific interest or experience in devised solo performance and wish to be considered for the class, please contact Kyle deCamp in advance.: kyledecamp@me.com.
Students who are approved to take either Acting II: Sondheim or Acting II: Solo Performance without having taken Acting I will have to take Acting I before being eligible for another Acting II class.
Since placement in an acting course may mean that someone else does not get into the course, the Department regards this application as making a serious commitment to the courses you itemize. Students who are placed in a course they have selected and then do not attend will be unlikely to be placed in an acting course next semester.
2. Audition for Shows. Students planning to audition for shows should fill out the form: see the sections on auditioning for shows. The form should be submitted prior to 5pm on September 8 if you are planning to audition that evening. Auditions will begin very shortly after the 6pm meeting concludes on September 8—auditioners should plan to attend the meeting. We will hold auditions only on Tuesday evening, and further details about the audition format—which will be online—will be forthcoming; as usual, students should prepare a 60-second monologue, memorized. Callbacks will be held beginning 6pm September 9, and actors may be called back for both shows. Casts will be announced by noon on Thursday, September 10. The first rehearsal for Electra will be Monday, September 14, 6:30pm, details forthcoming.
