Dear Members of the Barnard Community:
At the start of this new academic year, I write with gratitude to each of you for your dedication and support this summer as we worked to collectively resume learning, study, and research at Barnard. While students are not back in residence on campus this fall as we had originally planned and hoped, we begin the new term with a sense of inspiration.
I would like to take this opportunity to outline some of the unique opportunities I hope all members of our community will take advantage of this year.
“Big Problems: Making Sense of 2020” will provide the Barnard community with multiple lenses to view this time of massive global upheaval. This program will consist of a lecture series, open to students, alumnae, parents, faculty, and staff, as well as special opportunities for discussion for the Class of 2024. The First-Year Experience faculty have been particularly hard at work developing a new curricular component for all first-year students that will also enrich the full Barnard community. I have the pleasure of announcing the esteemed speakers for this series:

The series is open to all members of the Barnard community, and registration is required.
In addition to the “Big Problems” lecture series, we are offering new courses and have adapted existing courses to confront the challenges of the pandemic and its scientific, historical, artistic, and socioeconomic impact. We have also added new courses to our curriculum to directly query the underlying causes, manifestations, and consequences of structural racism and our individual and institutional responsibility for its existence and persistence through time. And over one-third of our courses will be offered in an entirely different seven-week immersive format.
Finally, we will offer students an enhanced set of opportunities for engagement with civic organizations in New York City. First, this academic year will mark the inaugural selection of courses offered through the Barnard Engages New York grant that Barnard received from the Mellon Foundation in support of long-term collaborations between Barnard faculty members and partner organizations in three thematic areas: immigration, poverty, and labor rights. And second, I am excited to announce that the Athena Center, in conjunction with the Office for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and the Center for Engaged Pedagogy, will be launching a new co-curricular program: ThirdSpace@. This program will explore key topics this year, including shortcomings in community safety measures, inadequate public safety nets, and gaps in access to education. Discussions will be open to members of the larger Barnard community, including our neighbors in Harlem (SPARK), with more intensive opportunities for group project work available to Barnard students (BUILD).
So many members of the Barnard community spent significant time this summer in preparation for these programs this fall. For faculty, this meant adjusting their schedules to fit a three-semester calendar; redesigning their modes of teaching to adapt to the necessities of virtual, hybrid, and hyflex teaching; innovating courses to take up topics of relevance to our students at this unique moment in history; and creating new immersive classes to better deliver a virtual experience to our students. Throughout all this, and despite many obstacles to their traditional summer progress, they continued their research and contributions to scholarship and the arts.
For our staff, the summer was spent preparing the campus for the fall reopening, including developing complex safety and health protocols that ensure the well-being of our community; updating classrooms with the technology necessary to deliver the best remote experience possible for our students; and ensuring that students have remote access to such campus resources as health and counseling services, library materials and services, career and employment planning, and student life programming. Thank you for your care and dedication to Barnard.
And, finally, to our students, I recognize the difficulties these past few months have posed. I know that this is not the start of the academic year you hoped for and expected to have. Please know that the faculty are wholly committed to your academic experience, as is evidenced by their hard work this summer.
As we work toward that day when we will once again be together on campus, there is much to look forward to now. I wish everyone courage and strength for a wonderful and productive fall semester.
