At Barnard, students have access to an array of scholarships and fellowships, more than 50 given by institutions outside of the College, including the Arthur Liman Yale Summer Fellowship, which empowers students to explore careers around social equity, specifically with a career in public interest law. Awardees of the Summer Fellowship participate in public projects, such as prison reform, immigration, environmental sustainability, and more.
This year’s Liman Fellows at Barnard are Rachel Barkin '22, Alexandra Berdon '21, Julia Tecotzky '21, and Niki Samtani ‘21.
"I deeply believe that we all have immense power to change the world around us and that is one of the reasons I am so honored to be a Liman Fellow," said Samtani, who expressed her excitement for the award, which would support her research around public interest law projects. "To continue developing law-based advocacy skills that help people take back control of their own lives."
Additionally, it helps for Barnard's fellows to be in a diverse city that offers students an opportunity to work on a variety of issues, such as immigrants’ and workers’ rights, prison conditions, educational adequacy, and juvenile justice.
"I’m originally from Boston, but I can't imagine being anywhere else besides New York City," said Samtani, who is majoring in American studies and religion. “This city is the best place to learn about navigating inequality, violence, and institutional disenfranchisement and misrepresentation. My courses at Barnard have given me essential tools to affect change in incredible ways.”
